First Drip (1/07/15): Attack on French newspaper, tail of Asian plane found, more

Twelve people have died and three others were critically injured as gunmen opened fire at the office of a Paris-based satirical magazine Wednesday, police said, an attack that France's president called a "terrorist operation." The office of Charlie Hebdo had been targeted in the past over its content, often aimed at religious groups.

Search crews have located the tail of AirAsia Flight 8501, which officials believe crashed off the coast of Borneo on December 28 while maneuvering to avoid bad weather. Rescuers found the jet's tail at the bottom of the Java Sea and are hoping that its discovery could lead to them to the aircraft's black boxes and further information about what doomed the flight.

The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, accepted late Tuesday the documents that will allow the Palestinians to join the International Criminal Court on April 1. The decision would allow Palestinians to file war-crimes suits against Israel, which has promised tough retaliation.

Gov. McCrory says Pres. Obama is open to a Medicaid waiver for North Carolina. At a meeting with Obama, McCrory raised the possibility of waiving federal rules on Medicaid expansion for the state.
