Heat and rain don't deter DNC protesters from first day of activities

Posted By on Sun, Sep 2, 2012 at 6:05 AM

Dizzying heat and humidity - and a near-torential downpour - didn't stop protesters from participating in the first day of events they have scheduled for Democratic National Convention week.

About 100 showed up at Area 15 in NoDa on Saturday for Festivaliberación, a day of workshops and musical performances. Local organizers welcomed a few buses of protesters who come directly from the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Police were nowhere to be found.

Members of Coalition to March on Wall Street South negotiated with the city manager and city attorney to allow, on good faith, protesters to camp at Marshall Park Friday night.

About 25 Charlotte Mecklenburg Police officers were dispatched to the park and asked activists about their plans for the evening. Interactions betwen police and protesters were peaceful.

There’s a lot going on in Charlotte with the Democratic National Convention just around the corner, and some of the facelifts around town are easy to spot. Less apparent are the art community’s preparations behind the scenes to culturally engage our thousands of visitors.

The local art community is ready to garner national attention. With the new museums in the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus, the very generous Arts and Science Council and the increasingly relevant McColl Center, it would be hard for the national arts scene to overlook the Queen City.

DNC 2012 Notebook: The GOP’s in Tampa. Really?

Posted By on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Steve Kerrigan said he isn’t paying much attention to the Republican National Convention happening this week in Tampa. Perhaps the Democratic National Convention Committee CEO is catching “snippets” here and there. But when I spoke with him on Wednesday, one of a parade of journalists hearing his last-minute thoughts and anxieties about Charlotte’s turn in the spotlight, it was clear he had some thoughts on the difference between the two.

“There isn’t one event planned by the convention that’s open to the public” in Tampa, he said.

The RNC might not want much public involvement, but it sure does like funny hats.

Charlotte haz catz

Posted By on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 10:40 AM

With just a few days before the Democratic National Convention officially kicks off, the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee released a video that will surely energize the party's base: cat ladies.

Fernando, the group's resident feline, pops up at different convention points of interest around the city, including Bank of America Stadium and Time Warner Cable Arena, to some bumping techno. It's garnered an impressive 4,550 or so views in the four days it's been on YouTube.

In a nation brutally divided between cat and dog lovers, I decided to look back at what some of our more noted presidents preferred. Most simply couldn't decide - and some went totally out of the box.

DNC 2012 Notebook: What makes a convention speaker 'electric’?

Posted By on Wed, Aug 22, 2012 at 2:48 PM

While the Republicans are hoping a hurricane doesn’t spoil their Tampa party, Democrats are “putting the finishing touches” on Time Warner Cable Arena, an excited Steve Kerrigan told the press on Wednesday. On Aug. 31, it will be first come, first served as the arena will open to the public. (Sign up for a free pass here.)

Time Warner Cable Arena gets a facelift.

With 13 days to go, the arena has the look of a move-in that’s taking shape but has lots of work ahead. DNCC Chief Operating Officer Theo LeCompte assured a trail of journalists that construction is “on schedule." I trust that on Aug. 31, visitors won’t be wearing the fashionable hard hats we donned to inspect media suites. The moving, flashing screens behind the speakers’ stage looked pretty impressive. When asked, Kerrigan and LeCompte would promise only a “dynamic” and “electric” experience, with more details to come. “The speakers are really going to shine” was all LeCompte would say.
