Wanted: Musicians... but where to find them?

Posted By on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 3:47 PM

With the help of Charlotte venues and the Carolina Live Music Society my band, Actual Proof, has gotten some steam and has been regularly playing shows in the Southeast. This has us tickled because we’re able to write and perform music for music lovers who celebrate live music.

But it turns out that our keyboard player is leaving the group. He has several reasons for leaving but it boils down to the fact that he’s not feeling it and is getting tired of traveling. It’s a bit like one of those relationships where you’re still in love but the other person doesn’t feel that way anymore and you come to a point where you accept the fact that you can’t force love. Nothing we can do can make him dig performing our music.

So, how to go about finding a replacement for him?

Holly Golightly hits Snug (12/15/2009)

Posted By on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs You may know the English chanteuse named after Truman Capote's protagonist in Breakfast at Tiffany's from her appearance on the White Stripes' Elephant, but Golightly's been delivering vintage-flavored rock 'n' roll since Jack White was a pimply teenager. A member of the all-girl garage rockers Thee Headcoatees in the early '90s, Golightly struck out on her own in 1995 and has released a string of records remarkable for their range – from Wanda Jackson rockabilly, Bakersfield boogie and Nuggets psych-rock to slinky Nancy Sinatra and Patsy Cline twang. Golightly and Lawyer Dave (aka The Brokeoffs) bought land in Georgia recently, and their latest records sound like they were dug directly out of the red clay. This one's not to be missed. With Bruce Hazel & Some Volunteers. Snug Harbor

Members of Dead End Parking and The New Familiars will join forces with Melissa Reeves on Tuesday night at the Double Door Inn for the Carolina Live Music Society's Christmas party.

The show starts at 9 p.m. with tickets going for just $5 — a portion of the proceeds will go to Daniel Flynn, drummer of the New Familiars, who recently became a father.

Rumors of pizza abound, too.

Ministry's Al Jourgensen has released a Christmas song... yep, you read that right. And from the first 30 seconds of the video, you can tell he's really happy about the holiday season, too.

Anyway, here it is:

Ghostland Observatory, Jason Ricci in town (12/12/2009)

Posted By on Sat, Dec 12, 2009 at 11:01 AM

Ghostland Observatory Pitchfork gave these guys like a 1.7 a while back, and while yrs truly is not a P-fork acolyte, methinks they nailed it on the head. Actually, methinks they should have nailed it on the head a little more, down to maybe like a point-oh-eight. Ever hear the phrase "there's no there there"? Two dudes. One plays horribly banal Casiotone beats. Other dude wears tight pants, dances around a lot, sings like Ian Astbury with his nuts in a vice. It's oh-so-eighties, as played by people who never had to live much through that decade. Save your money. Donate to Hospice. Take the old lady or old man out to dinner. Talk about something with substance. Still wanna dance? Throw on an old Stevie Wonder record. Drink a master cylinder or two. Feel shit. As the Dillinger Escape Plan/Mike Patton e.p. memorably put it, irony is a dead scene. Neighborhood Theatre (Davis)

Jason Ricci & the New Blood An openly gay front man, laden with a goth getup, may not be the norm in the scruff and macho world of the blues, but Ricci can hang with the best. Ricci is a harmonica player, oft making his harp sound like a lead guitar, backed by a crew of top musicians where the blues are subtly infused with funk, rock, and world music. The band is a blues and jam machine reportedly touring most of the year for the past several years playing blues ballads to roadhouse barn burners. Double Door Inn (Shukla)

Hey DJ! Update your set

Posted By on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 4:13 PM

Some people genuinely live by the policy, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Problem is, if that person is a DJ and you're in the club, chances are you'll be the one suffering through this guy's once "winning formula."

Attention DJ's! If you haven't updated your set since Jamie Foxx's "Blame It" came out, you're whack. If you still play Ron Browz "Arab Money" or any portion of your set is entirely too auto-tune, excuse my corniness, but you're 2000-late (thanks Fergie).

No one is expecting you to be scouring the streets, hopping the Lynx and digging for records like Q in "Juice" but as a professional iPod playlist, (that's essentially what people think you are), it's kind of your job to be current. Non-vinyl DJ's especially have no excuse for being behind on music.

Warped Tour, Tim McGraw, Brooks & Dunn next summer

Posted By on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 12:06 PM

There are rumblings in the concert world, and a few concerts for next summer have been announced.

According to Pollstar.com, the Vans Warped Tour will return to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 22, 2010.

Tim McGraw will be at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Aug. 13 with Lady Antebellum and Love and Theft.

Brooks & Dunn will be in town on June 4. Though no venue has been announced, I'm guessing it'll be out at Verizon, as well.

CD Review: Clipse

Posted By on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 11:51 AM

Clipse

The Deal: Borderline legendary rap duo drops their long awaited third studio album and checking their track record, it's probably going to be a classic.

The Good: There's no need to EVER question Clipse and Neptunes collaborations. "Popular Demand (Popeyes)" and "I'm Good" are hits, period. Plus, their classic sound is there.

DJ Khalil joins the party and after hearing the epic sounding, "Kinda Like A Big Deal" with Kanye West and reggae-laced, "There Was A Murder," and the cymbal-crazy, "Footsteps." it sounds like he (and Chin) built an instant rapport.
