Saying goodbye to Teddy Pendergrass

Posted By on Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 4:35 PM

Soul music legend Teddy Pendergrass passed away this week at age 59 leaving behind a great musical legacy. In honor of Teddy P (and no, not the T-Pain, version) here's some of my favorite tracks from the South-Carolina born, Philly-bred star, whose deep voice and sexy ballads surely led to some of my classmates' existence.

Teddy Pendgrass - "Close The Door (Live in  1979)" - It was his first Grammy nomination and easily the song I think of when I think Teddy P. Straight-forward sexuality and a rule I wish everyone followed. If you're going to give her what she's been waiting for man, close the door.

Get off your ass and get to a show

Posted By on Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 12:31 PM

Back in October, we held a CD release party at the Neighborhood Theatre for the latest edition of the Homebrew compilation series. As part of that event, we had a one-hour panel where a group discussed the state of Charlotte's music scene.

Some of the biggest applause of the night came from a statement basically saying, "Maybe the music scene is bad because we keep telling people it is... Maybe we should tell people it's great!" Applause followed and the panel ended on a high note.

Yeah, it was a good theory, but let's face facts — the music scene in Charlotte is in trouble. Earlier this week, the Neighborhood Theatre announced it will likely close in March. Tremont Music Hall is in the process of finalizing a deal to sell it and keep it going. Roger freakin' Daltrey couldn't sell 2,000 tickets to The Fillmore, yet it's not for a lack of population. FREE shows at the Neighborhood Theatre don't fill the place. We held our event for free with seven bands AND gave away CDs and only got 350 people there.

We are living in the largest city in the state, and 18th largest in the country. There are more than 1.7 million people in the metro area. So why doesn't anyone give a shit about live music in this town?

An anniversary Kobe wants to forget

Posted By on Thu, Jan 14, 2010 at 4:44 PM

While watching Kobe Bryant get his fourth NBA championship on Sunday, 10 seasons after winning his first, cementing his legacy as one of the best ever and killing all argument of him as a lackluster leader, I couldn't help but think about another 10 year anniversary for the future HOFer.

K.O.B.E. (or "Visions") was set to drop in January of 2000 and now that the whole Shaq-less championship monkey off his back, I figure he could clear up this other unfinished business. The album featured guest appearances from rap heavyweights Nas and Beanie Sigel but it also had not so awesome track featuring Tyra Banks. That not-so awesome song was the lead single and was performed by the duo, along with Kobe jersey clad back-up dancers, at the YouTube legendary All-Star weekend performance.

On the court, he was coming fresh off his first All-NBA defensive team (the youngest to ever do it), first ring and building a more than solid foundation for his career.  Off the court, Bean was dropping rhyme ... and terrible ones!

Here's a taste of some of the things the Kobester dropped on that unreleased LP: "What I live for? Basketball, beats and broads" ... fair enough. How about, "think ya eyein' me, all along I'm eyein' you/The hunter becomes the hunted, girl, I'm preying on you" ... a little creepy but still, reasonable.

Friends + Music

Posted By on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 3:53 PM

I don't think it's hyperbole to say, "friends shouldn't let friends listen to shitty music." But it's funny to think about which friends' musical opinions we trust.

No one listens to the girl who says someone's album is good but still has Britney Spears' Circus still getting plays on her iPod. Yet that one friend who put you on an artist you like and didn't gloat, "I put you on that" every time you go to play it, is usually one of your favorites.

It's the friend with good musical taste who you don't mind taking a road trip with, because even if you argue and aren't talking for long stretches of highway, at least the music will be good.

The revolution will be censored

Posted By on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 2:55 PM

If you ever find yourself in mainland China and fully jetlagged (you know, wide awake at 3 a.m.), there’s a fun game you can play. It’s called – “What Websites have the Chinese Government Censored?” It’s an interesting game. Especially when you see just how much of the World Wide Web isn’t allowed for viewing in one of the largest countries in the world that holds north of one billion of the planet’s people.

Here’s a quick list I found of forbidden sites:

Facebook (all social network sites for that matter: MySpace, Twitter, you get the idea)

YouTube – no funny home videos of people doin’ stupid stuff!?!?

Most of CNN (and any other US based news outlet)

Most of ESPN – this is where I fell apart really

'Neighborhood Theatre not going anywhere'; Tremont being sold

Posted By on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 12:04 PM

According to the owner of the Neighborhood Theatre, the venue isn't going anywhere, it's only the management that is set to change.

In related music venue news, word is coming out that Tremont Music Hall is finalizing a deal to sell the venue and keep it around, as well.

Stay tuned...
