Scott Horton is a renowned attorney who also reports now and then for the Daily Beast Web site. He’s reporting that, as we previewed here recently, Spanish prosecutors have made the decision to launch a criminal investigation of former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and five cohorts (soon to be referred to as co-conspirators) over their role in the torture of five citizens of Spain who were held at Guantanamo.
According to Horton, the announcement will come tomorrow in Madrid. In addition to Gonzales, the defendants are former Asst. AG Jay Bybee, former Deputy Asst. AG John Yoo, former Defense Dept. counsel Bill Haynes, former VP Dick Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington, and former Undersecretary of State Douglas Feith (who, as we are always pleased to point out, was described by former Iraq War military commander Gen. Tommy Franks as “the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth”). They are accused of having given the OK to the torture of prisoners held by the U.S. in the “war on terror.”

This is great news. Since the US is too gutless to do anything about the war criminals in its midst, it’s nice to see other countries picking up the slack, even if it won’t really lead anywhere except symbolically.
