Cartoon Insult

I am a reader of Creative Loafing from time to time, and Bissell-Hayes has on occasion run condo ads in your publication. However, I must tell you that after reading your recent publication, Vol.16, #34, p.12 (October 30) and the editorial cartoon on that page by Jim Hunt, I now realize why I will never use your publication as an advertising source. That cartoon was an absolute insult to every Greek in this town, and it was one of the most blasphemous things I have ever seen. I will further tell you that you also insulted every Christian of any denomination. Now it is clear that your paper caters to atheists and agnostics and other ungodly souls. I can promise that I will never read your vile and disgusting trash again and most certainly will never place an ad in that piece of rubbish.

Article Highlights

Important IssueI want to thank you for your article in this week’s Creative Loafing. “Parents: Autistic Kids Ill-Served” (October 30) highlighted an important issue facing Mecklenburg County’s children and families, giving our community the opportunity to become aware.

Your article was both informative and provocative. It is important for the community to see the impact the public policy has on individual families, and your article provided that insight.

The Council for Children is dedicated to being the voice for Mecklenburg County’s children. But, it takes an entire community to address systemic injustice — and to create solutions for children and families. We applaud those who step up to the plate to make this community a better place for children.

Thank you for joining us as a voice for our children.

Unfortunate Ad Placement

I am a regular reader of your paper. That said, please look on page 82 of the October 30 issue. It has adult sexual ads with pictures. I have no complaints about these; however, you will also notice a child’s picture in an ad for your paper on that same page. The bold text with the picture says “fun stuff & free stuff…happy.” The print which states the ad is for something other than sex is very small. Given the context of the page, I think this is unbelievably inappropriate. It looks like an ad for pedophiles. I imagine the ad was put there to take up space, but please be more prudent in your layout choices in the future.

Guns Here to Stay

I was turned off from CL a few years ago by an inane article by Jerry Klein about gun ownership and only picked it back up after I noticed Tara Servatius was a Libertarian and a good reporter. Your latest two articles on the “gun culture” may be the last straw (“Sniper School” by David Wallis and “Bang Bang” by David Walters, November 6).

I am tired of hoplophobes like David Walters whining about how they feel that guns are so dangerous and that “normal” people should not have such dangerous weapons as small arms.

Enough! Stop trying to turn America into a socialist paradise of government tyranny! Guns in American society are here to stay, whether you like it or not. If you cannot come to grips with this fact, then leave the country. There’s plenty of countries where you can feel safe from your fellow man. And people think “gun nuts” are paranoid.

As for Mr. Walters’ notion of “defenseless” animals, remember your ecology lesson in high school? Predators and prey and population curves?

Human beings have destabilized the ecosystem by removing the natural predators — wolves and other animals that might kill a human — of deer and other game animals. The only thing left to control the populations of deer (excepting human hunting) is disease and food supply.

Disease is never guaranteed, and food supply only allows excessive populations to starve to death from lack of food. Which would you rather have: deer killed quickly and mercifully in seconds by an arrow or bullet or have them starve to death over the course of weeks?

Not such a cowardly and brutal act now, is it Mr. Walters?
