The Deal: Now, R&B singers put out mixtapes like rappers, this is Chris Brown’s leap into the madness.

The Good: It took a media controversy for this dude to finally to step away from doing bubblegum shit. However, don’t get it twisted. Most of this is still for young girls, but at least he can outright talk about sex, curse and be a more stereotypical R&B singer — we’re too old for the innuendo. His “remixes” of Trey Songz hits are funny and “Sex” could actually be a really sold single.

The Bad: Last I checked, Chris Brown could still sing really well, this isn’t indicative of his vocal abilities whatsoever. All that’s missing on this mixtape are the screaming girls from the live show to push me over the edge of crazy (in a bad way). Lot’s of synth, generic auto-tune and catchy hooks I can’t get out of my head! As weird as it sounds, I miss the old, screaming on every track and hilarious adlib, DJ Drama.

The Verdict: Not my taste but really? This mixtape wasn’t for my demographic at all. I’m sure it’s in heavy rotation for fast ass lil’ girls and the high school dudes that are trying to freak them. There’s a few songs I wouldn’t mind hearing at a party but otherwise I wouldn’t dedicate the hard drive space for this one, just stream it.

  1. Im not a high school girl and actually im older than him and the mixtape is HOT. He did it for his fans and not for critics.

  2. I think the mixtape is just a fun expression of the musical ideas floating in Chris’ head. I respect that he is only 20 years old and definitely has time to further grow in his material and production.

  3. I think you’re overlooking the fact that grown women can relate and like this mix-tape as well. I’m a grown woman and I love the music. Im not a crazed young fan that wants to sleep with Chris. I just like the music. The “invented head” remix is really good. So is “I wanna rock”, “Convertible”. He did a good job on the mixtape….

  4. This mixtape is really great and i cannot stand the fact that he is still being judged,it may not be up front but it is subtle.

Considering it’s not common for singers to participate in a solo mixtape…He’s doing the damn thing and he’s hot with it!

    Loving it xx

  5. Let me start by saying, I haven’t been a screaming lil girl in about 30 years and I absolutely love the Disc. I think that it does show some growth in Chris. I love the subject matter because lil ass girls and boys should be somewhere learning how to read and not running around sexing each other. There are several good songs on the Mixtape. I don’t care what Chris did in his personal life, I just know that I love his music and I think that as a singer, he has done a great job. People need to put their personal opinions to the side and really put a NON-biased opinion of the music out so that people can judge for themselves.

  6. First off this mixtape was not just music for those little fast girls as u say. I am his age so there’s your answer. The mixtape is hot. His album Graffiti was hot too. He really brought this this time and this is him just having fun. The fun Chris that makes you dance is what we’ve been missing. My faves on the mixtape are
Turnt Up, Too Freaky, Shoes, Madusa, Work With it,
No Bull S***, Perfume, and Sex. Basically the whole mixtape is hot. Good job Chris. Good luck in whatever u do in the future cause it’s your time to shine now.

  7. Your rite! His shit is weak compared to Trey’s Anticipation album. .c. breezy tried to do his thing key word tried but the shit flopped for me nothing special to be honest with you. .

  8. Thanks for the comments! I’m actually a Breezy supporter, I don’t care what he does in his personal life.

I think he’s a phenomenal talent who could literally sing a chick’s draws off in a ballad but he’s moving further and further away from that. It’s just a mixtape though so who knows what the album will actually sound like.

  9. @Mike McCray…I understand what you mean about his ability to sing a woman out of her drawers but I think it doesn’t hurt to change it up a little. Many of his sexually-heavy songs on the mixtape are no different from “Take My Time” on Graffiti.

    Chris is transitioning from his
earlier, kid-friendlier material to an adult musical sound so the tone will change up. I too like to hear Chris sing about “love” over “sex” but I take in consideration where he is in his life. He is a 20 year old who still has a # of women still throwing themselves at him and I doubt he is thinking about the next young lady he will fall in love with considering his relationship with his first love ended badly and publicly.

  10. I agree with most of the comments on here! I am 23 year old college grad, and I love the mixtape and have no shame in saying so! Not to disrespect the writer of the article or anyone else’s opinion cause everyone is entitled to his or her own, but it really pisses me off when people say that if you enjoy his music you must be a teenage girl with wet panties! Ugh! I do not lust for CB in any way, shape or form. I attended one of his concerts back in Nov, and trust, it was more than just teenage girls there! There were plenty of 20 and 30 something women and men there as well. His fanbase really does have a broader audience than people think.

I have been a CB fan since day one and have enjoyed most of what he has put out. Mostly I enjoy seeing him perform cause I think he can shut a stage down. Yes, in the beginning of his career he was aimed at a younger audience because he was freaking 16 year old kid. He had to play it safe and he was more than likely under restraints from his record label. Now he is a young adult and experimenting with his sound. Like most artist, he a enjoys different types of music from hip hop to r&b, so he makes different types of music to reflect his taste. Any artist that can do a hit pop record like ‘Forever’ and then turn around a do a hood record like ‘Big Booty Judy’, is versatile.
I like the mixtape because I think it gives us something we are not use to hearing from him. It more of a hood vibe with mostly club bangers adn hot beats. Not it’s not deep lyrically, but it does show versatility as an artist. He’s rapping, and its not as corny as most would assume. Yes it is explicit, and doesn’t exactly showcase his vocals, but it’s a mixtape. It’s more for the underground and the streets, whereas albums are more mainstream.
It’s mostly full of fun party records, however, there are some pretty decent slow jams on there as well.
As a woman, I can appreciate the freaky slow jams as much as the more mature ones. It’s no problem to switch it up a lil.
Besides, you can’t tell me ‘Glow in the Dark’ (though a very old record now) can’t appeal to an older crowd! It’s a beautiful record with good production that shows growth and talks about sex in a more grown up and less explicit way.
Overall, I think the mixtape is a plus. He did something outside of his element adn really nailed it to me! I can say that I enjoyed all but a few of the songs on it, and from a 21 songs thats not bad!

  11. i love the mix tape, i think there’s something for everyone on it, chris has suffered enough, and so have his fans, ”in my zone” is great i love it,i love chris, and you can’t hate on free music,
personally im so happy that chris is bringing out music again,
and as a fan, i hope he carrys on,

he’s making his fans happy so,

and i really like the fact that now he’s grown, and matured i like that he’s bring out stuff, for his bigger fan base, come on, my granma loves crawl, now if he can get my granma listening to his music then, well, there’s something special about him,

and as a woman, i love everything about his music, him and what he stands for.

  12. I cannot believe psople actually gave this mean hearted review to this mixtape, common now this mixtape is the bomb *sigh*

  13. I am 31. I love this mix tape. “Perfume” is very grown and sexy. “I wanna rock” very head nod get your blood flowing type song. “Too Freaky” and No “Bullshit” hot tracks. and “Big Booty Judy” has nothign to do with age. teenage boys and grown ass men alike will crank this in their ipods and looking at booties all damn day. Great work Chris! Now give us a hot HOT album

  14. I love it! I’m actually much older than Chris and can not get enough of the mix tape! Just wish he could have done this instead of graffiti! Great Job – he’s been missing and now he’s back in rotation.
