The Deal: Four bands (two local) celebrate Johnny Cash, and play some of his music, too.
The Good: The cats and kittens were out that night. From the first notes of Hick’ry Hawkins to the flying beer … From the jitterbugging up front to the last growl of the Belmont Playboys, the fourth annual Cash Bash tore through the small Derita venue with a fury. Sure, there were some solid covers — “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Jackson” among them — but the originals were just as good. Out-of-towners Rocket 350 and The Bo-Stevens joined in the fray for what amounted to a honky-tonkin’, rabble-rousin’, grease-and-growl shindig.
The Bad: $1.50 PBR cans, four bands, high energy, a lively crowd, five hours of music … what could be bad? I’m sorry I missed the pre-party on Friday night.
The Verdict: It’s a shame this event is only held once a year, but at least each day we’re one step closer to the next one.
