President Obama came to Chapel Hill on Tuesday as part of a nationwide tour to promote lower interest rates on student loans. While I commend the president for taking on such an important issue, I’m a little nonplussed that he didn’t mention Amendment One – even in passing.

Amy Gardner of The Washington Post shares in the frustration. She writes:

His delicate sidestep of Amendment One, a ballot initiative to be decided May 8 that would recognize marriage between a man and a woman as the only legal domestic partnership in North Carolina, is seen by some as another sign that he is not fully committed to gay rights – an interpretation that could dampen the enthusiasm of the young voters he is trying to court.

She brings up a good point about constituents:

The issue is particularly complicated in historically conservative North Carolina. Obama scraped together a razor-thin victory there four years ago with a multicultural coalition that included independents, African Americans and Hispanics – constituencies that are less uniformly enthusiastic about expanding gay rights than campus activists.

  1. I’m voting against A1 and I despise Obama (worst president ever; GWB second worst ever) but why do liberals expect – nay DEMAND – that everyone in their orbit behave like their little puppets and embrace their little pet issues every day?

I’m actually stunned that our megalomaniacal president, who feels compelled to offer his unsolicited opinion on every issue under the sun, took a minute to recognize that he has no business commenting on a STATE issue. Now if he’d only realize that education isn’t mentioned in the US Constitution either and let interest rates float to their market level without government intervention so that we can get control of the Education Bubble.

  2. Who Yo Daddy: Actually, Obama bumped Jimmy Carter from the #1 spot. I think internal polls are telling Obama not to mess with this issue as it is not going to earn him any extra votes. He had to come back here in a few months for his convention and as of right now, he has an uphill battle if he wants to win NC again. Supporting A1 probably would not help him in that. I have read several articles that Black pastors are urging their flocks to vote for A1. All in all, probably best he not mention it at all. BTW: I voted today and I voted Against A1.
