I’m wondering if anyone finds story line from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police surrounding the shootings of the two police officers as bizarre as I do.

Thanks to a Thursday Charlotte Observer article, we now know that accused killer Demetrius Antonio Montgomery was taken into custody less than 45 minutes after the two officers were shot and killed at the Timber Ridge Apartments Saturday night (March 31) around 11:15 p.m.

The problem with that is that at 11 a.m. Sunday (April 1), when I went on the air to do my radio show on WBT radio, the police were still telling the media and the public that they were looking for two black males and were asking for the public’s help in finding them.

Now we learn that Montgomery was in custody all along, though he wasn’t officially charged with the crime until Sunday evening. Huh? I understand that the police can’t release all the details of criminal investigations as they unfold, and I’m not asking them to.

But to me, giving the media false information — that they were still looking for two black males — when they clearly already had the only suspect in custody that they intended to charge is spreading false information to the public via the media.

This terrible tragedy tears me apart, too, and I feel for the department. But it’s stuff like this that is making me question everything we’ve been told about the shooting so far. Where do the lies of omission, and commission, end in this case?

  1. “Where do the lies and ommissions end in this case”?

I find the entire story to be suspect. I dont see how a single man could have done the shooting as reported by CMPD.

Further Chief Stephens credits Timberidge residents with helping them to make the arrest . And yet Montgomery’s cousin Shauna Gibbs [who lives at the complex] has repeated to media her statement that the suspect had no “gun” and had left the complex 20 minutes before the shootings were reported to have occured. Doesnt Shauna Gibbs count as a witness? She too lives at Timberidge.
Gibbs is one of the best witnesses in this case as it relates to the suspects whereabouts during the relevant time period.
The information from Gibbs who was with Montgomery that day is not the kind which would point a finger at Demetrius Antonio Montgomery as the shooter.

And I wouldnt look for the CMPD to produce an alleged murder weapon anytime soon. In all likelyhood the suspect will be locked away to rot until he accepts some kind of plea agreement in return for an addmission of guilt.

All information regarding this case came to a screeching halt once the suspect was in custody and his guilt announced to and through the local media.

The fate of the accussed is in the hands of the CMPD and no one else. Even his hearing was attended by a boat load of CMPD along with Sherrif Pendergrass(sp?) as if to send Montgomery a message not to blurt out anything that could embarass the CMPD. The guy was surrounded by Police.

  2. I also find the story to be suspect. My heart goes out to the families of these officers and the Timberidge residents.

I read in one of the Charlotte Observer articles that Demetrius Antonio Montgomery had been identified as the man in the white t-shirt having a conversation with the two officers right before the shooting.

It would be impossible to shoot not one, but two people in the back of the head while you are facing them and talking to them. Especially two trained and armed members of law enforcement.

The story claimed Mongomery was caught running away from the scene. Wouldn’t you run if someone was shooting near you? Especially if you just saw two people shot? It’s called FEAR not GUILT.
In my opinion there is still a killer on the loose!

  3. CMPD report the murder weapon to be .32 caliber. .32 caliber is known as a popular “back up” gun to law enforcement. Street gangs too like them because they are easily concealed. It has very little power except up close. And you cant get any closer than this shooting.

Demetrius is listed as being 5’4″ which is very short. So depending on the height of the two officers the chances are very good that the shots would have travelled from low to high trajectory. But the officials should be able to determine these kinds of things very quickly. They could almost re enact the entire shooting to determine who stood where, etc.

As far as the Timberidge resident’s helping police to locate the suspect I am reminded of the Denzel Washington movie of a few years ago “Training Day”. In a scene from the neighborhood Denzels character reminds the residents of the housing projects that “you just live here but I run things, I am the police”… “I am gonna make a cases on each of your asses and you’ll be shooting baskets in Pelican Bay”. Or something to that effect.

I think it would be relatively easy to shut the mouths of the Timberidge residents, especially if what they saw contradicted the pre conceived notion that Montogomery was the shooter.

There is something wrong with this entire story. The two officers would have to have been standing “shoulder to shoulder” in order for the shooter to get the drop on both of them without so much as any kind of defensive or offensive action taken by either of the officers.

  4. Look at the recent arrest made in the case of two Charlotte Police officers who were charged with “drug conspiracy”. Reports say that they were in conspiracy with a drug dealer. They protected him, gave him information, advised him to re locate when the police might catch him.

Where were these two officers on the night of March 31, 2007?

  5. I used to live in charlotte, but moved away. I see Montgomery was released from Char-Meck county jail. Has he been convicted and/or sentenced yet? I can’t find any results of either way, if someone could let me know what the status of this is, I would like to know, my email is: scottylaughalot@yahoo.com

  6. His name is showing inactive at Central Prison, does that mean he is no longer there or released? Normally when you are sent to any prison you have been convicted of “A” “THE” crime, or if you view sentencing charges from mecklenburg county inmate “Search” he has none sentencing, which leaves me to believe that he has been released. No sentencing is showing at all under Mecklenburg County only his charges. I do agree, although he may have had numerous charges and conviction prior to this incident, I TRULY don’t believe this man did this, and the police knows it too, that’s why he sat in Mecklenburg county jail for over one year. If they knew for a fact that he committed these crimes, his trial would have been over within several months, they would have made sure of this. Wher is the GUN, one was never recovered…don’t they need the evidence? Police officers are so corrupt these days it’s a shame with only a few who are still good. I would say ate least 80% are CORRUPT!!! I’ve seen what they do to people and when it’s done to them it’s the WORST thing in the world. Don’t get me wrong anyone, who commits crimes and ARE truly found guilty as charged should be punished, but these police officers today just hide behind that badge and think they can do anything and get away with it, but GOD is going to fix all of that when they least expect it!!!

  7. I know for a fact that he didn’t kill them officers they need to go back and recap what happened the night of March 31, 2007 and get all the evidence and get it right this time because there’s no way someone can shoot you in the back of the head and be standing right in front of you
