Un. Be. Lievable. In case you needed any more reasons to despise health insurance companies, health care reform advocates today are pointing out some of the mind-boggling things that some insurers consider pre-existing conditions. An industry that is widely viewed as being heartless, and thats on its better days, is being justly attacked for allowing insurers in eight states including the Carolinas, naturally to classify domestic violence victims as high-risk, or uninsurable, because being beaten up by one’s mate is a pre-existing condition. Yep, the health insurance industry has a big new jewel in its Cruelty Crown.
Two things: first, denying coverage to women whove been beaten by their spouses is grotesque and clearly inhuman, and I dont want to hear some lame excuse about protecting their profits. Second, its also now clearer than ever that the insurance industry cant, or wont, properly monitor itself, which lends yet more proof that it needs a major overhaul.
Meanwhile, states can legislate against this heinous practice, as Arkansas did in April when lawmakers there told health insurers to act like decent human beings for a change.

Mr. Griffin, you obviously have absolutely not the slightest whit of understanding of how domestic violence operates. Many victims are afraid or unable to leave because of the fear of future violence and retribution; many others have been terrorized into believing that they cannot sustain themselves or their children without the economic intervention of a husband. You very ignorantly assume that women are victims by choice; this sort of logic is not only anti-human and sickeningly cold, it’s just plain evil.
Dr. Davis and Rex, you’re both right. Griffin, in this sickening post about domestic abuse and health insurance, has shown how repulsive he and his views are. As for the comments on Mrs. Griffin’s status, let me remind anyone reading here that in the past, Griffin has talked about the advantages of marrying “foreign” women (as Frank did) because they are submissive to their husbands in public. Yes, seriously, that’s how screwed up the guy is. I still can’t believe CL allows this obsessive Nazi buffoon so much space on its website.
This is about as good as when I got a referral for an adolescent rape victim… insurance wouldn’t cover the counseling because it was “pre-existing” and she had not had the coverage (through her parents) for a year.
