You’d think we’d have evolved past discrimination by now, but no. We’re too busy picking at each other’s faults and failing to find ways to better our collective lot in life.

We — meaning the white majority — are always looking for some minority group to repress because we’re scared of losing our number one spot in, well, damn near everything.

The news that undocumented immigrants would be allowed to enroll at community colleges throughout the state came as a relief for some advocates. However, now that they’ve examined the big picture they’re pointing to faults in the government’s new plan, which really only boils down to legal discrimination.

These students aren’t asking for a free ride, they’re asking for a chance. Instead of allowing them opportunity, our government — with its long history of repressive laws — feels it’s OK to dangle college just out of their reach then moan and groan about how we — the taxpayers — are being taken advantage of.

I’m calling bull shit on that nonsense. Immigrants pay taxes, too.

Moreover, it’s well known, the more education someone has the more they’re able to take care of themselves, their families and give back to society. Now, why wouldn’t we want that?

Well, dear readers, because we’re perpetually scared of “others,” that’s why. What if they’re smarter or more skilled in some way than we are? What if we have to get off our lazy asses and work harder so they won’t take our jobs? What if all people, every where, realize no one is actually better than anyone else? *gasp*

You can “what if” yourself into a mental hospital, if you like, or you can accept the truth: There are no “others,” dig? We’re all human beings and, brothers and sisters, that means we’re all pink underneath.

The decision from the State Board of Community Colleges allows undocumented students to enroll in degree programs at all of the state’s 58 campuses, but it won’t take effect until at least next fall because of a slow-moving administrative rules review process. And if enough people object, the rule could face a vote by the legislature, which has the power to kill it.

If the rule is approved, undocumented students will get last priority for classes at a time when surging enrollments have filled classrooms to capacity. And out-of-state tuition of $7,700 per year will be out of reach for many of the children of low-wage workers.

“We cannot call this a victory,” said Andrea Bazan, a long-time activist who has pushed for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

  1. Why is it when life’s rejects get rejected they cry racism always pointing the finger at someone else instead of looking inside themselves. Could it be that a track record might have some bearing on rejection? So I don’t have someone attempt to mix words I’ll spellout why I mean. First of all illegal means they broke the law entering the USA. Then they took advantage of free food, free medical care, free education and by the way how did they pay their taxes doing this? Does someone pay taxes on free services other then ordinary born and bred citizen of all colors. It seems the writer attempts to discriminate against legal citizens of color. Are they saying people of color are equal to whitey?

  2. (Almost) anytime anyone buys something, they pay taxes.
Illegal workers with fake SS# documents also get the same taxes pulled their gross pay as the rest of us.
Now, if you want to criticize the business owner who hires illegals because they work hard for cheap, please: speak up.
But *anyone* who risks their lives to get here — from idiot “patriots” with guns to cut-throat smugglers — and then lives a dozen to an apartment so money can be sent home to support a family is ***more American than most Americans***.
That kind of perseverance deserves respect, not derision.
(When exactly did so many people in this country become such self-centered, cold-hearted ignoramuses? Or is being loud and mouthy just an identifying characteristic?)

  3. So according to a Socialist cry baby illegals are more American then born and bred Americans? So they pay taxes when they get food stamps, when they go to an emergency room, when they have special education classes? Listen why don’t you direct your taxes towards the “real” Americans and I’ll direct mine to those born and bred, some of whom have had it worse then any illegal could imagine considering they were born in a Third World country. You assume all born and breds have had it easy you crybaby and the only ones who’ve had it bad are those who are “above” the law. Poor baby’s! Take your blinders off.

  4. What’s with all of the assumptions?

There are plenty of well educated immigrants who come to America and end up washing dishes in restaurants to get by.

America, might I remind you, is a nation of immigrants and the land of opportunity.

There are plenty of Americans who weren’t born in this country who worked hard, became citizens and are giving back to their communities.

All people, regardless of skin color or nation of origin, are equal, BullThistle. Everyone deserves a chance.

  5. Well, like my Hispanic mother likes to remind me — all of us on this side of the hemisphere are Americans.
    But, whatever.

If there were no jobs, these illegals wouldn’t be here.

They work. Very hard. And for less money.

The idea that a group that hails the free market is the same group that agitates to keep “them” out seems rather odd to me.

Let them work. Pay ’em and tax ’em and take out money to cover health care. That’s the American way.

Why is everyone so pissy and angry?

Competition, people. I thought we were all pro-capitalist here in our wonderful mixed-economy nation.

  6. “Capitalism does not mean we need to ignore the breaking of laws”
    — dont steal, dont lie you mean these laws right?

what about freedom of contract and freedom of association?

If I want to hire someone, the who is the state to say who I can hire or not?. We agree on a wage and I pay them that wage. By what right does a group in DC or in Raleigh say I cant willingly agree on some terms with another party. Someone willing to work harder for less is a boon to the overall economy. That lowers prices, increasing purchasing power.

Oh you must mean state laws that are always infringing on capitalism. Making sure I meet quotas for certain preferred groups, threatening me if I dont pay certain taxes and etc.

The real problem is the welfare state once again. Career tax feeders want to make sure welfare dollars (stolen money via taxation)go to the desired recipients rather than scrapping the system altogether. We have a system currently paying american folks NOT to work called unemployment benefits.

    Ho hum…

  7. There is nothing wrong with hiring someone to work BUT if they are illegal you cannot. You of all people Luke know we are represented in government and they made the laws that we live by and the current laws say we cannot hire illegals. You know we are a nation of laws and when we begin to ignore these laws, we begin to fall apart.

Your last statement was very good.

  8. “desired recipients”

Interesting. Can you elaborate on this welfare conspiracy?

Also, which is worse: the worker who risks his or her life — and breaks the law in doing so — to get a job and find a better life ….

Or the company that hires the illegal worker to take advantage of the cheaper labor ?

  9. It’s sad that there is so much racism in America. Too bad Billy Bob doesn’t even know yet that he has lost this fight.
A comrehensive immigration reform is a matter of when, not if, and it is the just thing to do!

  10. “which is worse:”

Send them both to jail. They are both guilty, without a doubt so they could be considered equal. Does it really matter if a criminal suffered more in completing a crime?

“It’s sad that there is so much racism in America.”

Sorry but what you are talking about are law abiding citizens. Just because you are not able to scam a free handout does not make the cop that catches you a racist.

“A comrehensive immigration reform is a matter of when, not if, and it is the just thing to do!”

Sorry but you are more likely to get deported than to have comprehensive imigration reform pass. Even the democrats are against rewarding illegals. They might get a work visa perhaps but not direct citizenship.
