An exciting week of sport in the Charlotte and North Carolina region has brought us some big news in Soccer, Baseball and Football. Below is a round-up of all the latest news that you need to know.
Soccer – A new home for Charlotte Independence
Charlotte Independence will be playing in a new stadium as of July 7.
The American Legion Memorial Stadium has now been refurbished with a 21st century modern design, but still displays a lot of the original charms. It has also been constructed in such a way that it can now facilitate multiple sports. It has been said that it will be one of the best stadiums (in which to watch soccer) in the entire country. It was originally built in 1936 and was dedicated by the then President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who took the train to visit the stadium for it’s opening.
Charlotte Independence had been playing at Sportsplex at Matthews, and it has been decided that they will continue to utilise their previous home for coaching purposes. American Legion Memorial Stadium is equipped for 10,500 spectators and has a quality artificial pitch fit for a pro team. It is located nearby Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Elizabeth neighborhood and Independence Park. The belief is that the new stadium is in a great catchment zone, so this being a major factor, The Independence hope to triple their current attendances to around 5500.
The first Independence game in the $40.5 million American Legion Memorial Stadium will be held on July 7 and will see Charlotte Independence host New York Red Bulls II.

Baseball – A weakened N.C State almost do the unthinkable in the CWS
Covid-19 protocols forced half of the N.C State roster to miss out the crucial game against Vanderbilt with Vanderbilt eventually emerging victorious 3-1.
All hope is not lost just yet as the rematch on Saturday will decide who advances to the College World Series finals. The coach has stated that he hopes to have a fuller roster available for selection for the match, on the provision that Covid tests come back as negative.
The N.C State Wolfpack were weakened for the game against Vanderbilt, but a solid performance from the patchy line-up took the game to the final innings. Ultimately, Kumar Rocker proved to be the difference. The Vanderbilt starting pitcher stuck out 11 and allowed 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk.
All attention will now be on Saturday’s game where the loser faces the devastation of having their season finish, while the winners will go on to the Finals.
Football – Panthers Working Overtime
The Panthers are officially still on vacation; however, the team have announced that they will be conducting some optional mini-camps for the players and also pre-season practices against Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens. Pre-season work started early as The Panthers secured contracts for 9 of the draft from 2021. The 2021 draft saw 10 new arrivals and now 9 of them are definitely staying on. Most notably, Chuba Hubbard, with the 22-year-old, Canadian, line-back, signing a four-year deal worth $4.2 million. The Panthers are planning on a future with him in it having impressed this far.
