Hannah Dennis is a 26-year-old filmmaker who's had the rare opportunity to write, direct and co-edit a full-length feature film. Though there is no set release date, Hannah is anxiously awaiting the debut of her project, which has been in postproduction for nearly three years.
While a full-time graduate student at UNCC, the then 23 year-old Dennis began shooting the independent film, Bird in a Glass House, with Foutz Studios Oct. 11, 2003.
She began writing the screenplay for Bird in the fall of 2000 for a class while attending Pfeiffer University. The film was originally written as a short, but after developing the characters a little more, Bird would be the first full-length feature film for Foutz Studios.
Bird's initial budget was around $5,000 (a price that was likely exceeded).
What were some of the most common challenges during shooting? "Dogs barking, horns honking and crackheads coming up to you and saying, 'Are y'all makin' a movie?' in the middle of a shot," she says.
After filmmaking, skateboarding ranks as one of her great passions. She recently recovered from a heinous skateboarding injury that took more than nine months to heal.
She has a tribal bird tattooed on her upper back and shoulders commemorating her first movie. "It was the kind of landmark moment where you change so much that you make the outside match the inside," Dennis says. "Every thing I have written in my life up to this point has in some way had a theme of flight; the image of the bird was fitting."
