We get a lot of books sent to us from various publishers for possible review. Most of them are crap, but one crossed my desk that I've actually delved into and enjoy: America Unzipped: In search of sex and exploration, by MSNBC.com's "Sexploration" columnist Brian Alexander.
Here are some facts you might not have known about sex in America, according to the press release of the book:
• The adult industry rakes in revenues of somewhere between $11 and $15 billion per year, right on par with the "legitimate" film industry.
• One of the recent best-selling DVDs in the United States was pornographic, though you'd never know it from the official entertainment industry listings.
• In 2006, by the estimate of AVN Media Network, we spent two billion dollars at exotic dance clubs. We spent $1.7 billion for cable TV porn, $2.8 billion on Internet porn, and another $1.7 billion on sex toys.
• Middle-class women now routinely write out checks at "Passion Parties," Tupperware-style gatherings for the vibrator curious. These parties generate sales of about $100 million worth of oils, lotions and battery operated love to retail customers every year.
Thus far, my favorite part in the book was when the writer attended a love and marriage workshop sponsored by a church, and the pastor encouraged the couples to do anything and everything in the bedroom, specifically anything oral, but definitely nothing anal.
