CMAs are on tonight

Posted By on Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Throw your cowboy hat in the air, or wave it around like you just don't care... Either way the Country Music Awards are on tv tonight.

You can click here for a list of nominees and come back here tomorrow for a list of winners.

In the meantime, here are my half-assed predictions on who will win tonight — keep in mind, I'm not a fan of 95 percent of country music:

Entertainer of the Year — Hasn't Kenny Chesney won this award for the last 20 years? OK, maybe just three times at the CMAs, but the last four times at the ACMs. He's the safe bet.

Female Vocalist of the Year — It's a tough competition, but you'd have to assume that Carrie Underwood is going to take it home. Unfortunately, Faith Hill isn't in the category so we can't see her freak out.

Male Vocalist of the Year — I have no idea on this one. I'd say just give it to the guy with the biggest cowboy hat.

New Artist of the Year — A good friend of mine keeps saying Lady Antebellum is going to be the "next big thing." I trust her judgment.

Vocal Group of the Year — Hmmm...Never heard of Emerson Drive... Rascall Flats has a nasally singer... Lady Antebellum is a possibility (see above)... The Eagles shouldn't be in this category... I'd go with Little Big Town — they did a good cover song with Sugarland.

Vocal Duo of the Year — Big & Rich broke up, so they should be disqualified. The Wreckers haven't had a hit... Brooks & Dunn and Montgomery Gentry — aren't they the same group? I'd go with Sugarland. It's hard to beat the vocals of Jennifer Nettles.

Single of the Year — "Stay" by Sugarland is probably the only one I know on the list, so that's my pick. Country people tend to be pretty religious though, so I wouldn't be surprised if "I Saw God Today" won.

Album of the Year — I haven't heard any of these albums, but a lot of people like Kenny Chesney.

Song of the Year — OK, this is the same thing as Single of the Year. Why do they have such similar categories? Instead of voting on a winner, they should vote out one of these two categories.

Musical Event of the Year — You have to hope that Robert Plant doesn't win, he doesn't need another reason not to do a Zeppelin reunion. I'll go with the Little Big Town/Sugarland combo... It's the only other one I've heard.

Music Video of the Year — Do people still make videos? I'd go with "Stay" again... yeah, again, the only one I've seen.

Musician of the Year — Having seen Jerry Douglas at Bonnaroo, I'd go with him. Probably because none of the other names look familiar to me — they're mostly session players.

So, enjoy tonight's show. I can pretty much guarantee I won't be watching. I also wouldn't use the above predictions to make bets with your friends.
