The Charlotte City Council will get a briefing during a Tuesday workshop on the proposed ordinance that could impact citizens demonstrating at the Democratic National Convention.

Tuesday’s City Council workshop starts at 5 p.m. in Room 267 of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center. Discussion on the DNC rules is slated for 6 p.m.. A citizen’s forum for the public to speak is scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m.A draft ordinance of one of the rules would bar the use of “noxious substances” (read: feces, urine, animal parts) as projectiles. It also would make it unlawful for anyone other than government officials to block off roads, walkways or buildings with objects, or for demonstrators to use aggressive protesting techniques such as a “lock box” or “sleeping dragon.”
And that rule would also bar camping — no tents, no tarps, no sleeping outdoors. That’s been an issue with the local Occupy Charlotte group, one of countless spinoff protests across the county tied to the Occupy Wall Street movement. Those activists have been camping on the lawn surrounding Old City Hall since October.
