The seventh annual Charlotte Jewish Film Festival promises to be out of this world — literally. The 11-day event kicks off with a free screening of An Article of Hope, a documentary about Israel’s first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, and the tiny Toran scroll that accompanied him into space aboard the ill-fated shuttle Columbia. All told, the festival will showcase nine feature films, including the award-winning coming-of-age tale The Matchmaker and the documentary Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story (narrated by Dustin Hoffman). Also on the schedule is 1920’s The Golem (pictured), the silent classic that relates the medieval Jewish legend about a clay creature who’s magically brought to life by a well-meaning rabbi. Several of the festival movies will be presented along with guest speakers and/or short films. Ticket prices vary; All-Film Passes are available for $64.
