It all started back in the early ’90s when a little group called Jodeci released Forever My Lady. From then on, Charlotte was put on the map as a place that was deep with talent. Since then, the city has had the pleasure of being home to Missy Elliott (back when she was part of the group Sista), Calvin Richardson, Sunshine Anderson, and its newest superstar, Anthony Hamilton. Even High Point native and American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino calls the Queen City home. Blessed and Anointed for Kingdom Development (B.A.K.D) wants to continue with this tradition by producing the Charlotte Youth Idol Competition. B.A.K.D. is dedicated to give Charlotte and surrounding area youth a safe and fun environment to develop their talent. Contestants will sing or rap a cappella (without music) in hopes of securing a $1,000 cash grand prize and studio time. There are two competition age groups, 5-11 and 12-17. The first round began on July 8 at Actor’s Theatre, 650 E. Stonewall St. Semifinals will also be held there on Saturday, July 15. The public can view the finals a week later on Saturday, July 22 for $10 as we find out who will assume Charlotte’s top talent crown for 2006.
