If you read this column last week, you noticed that instead of bringing you my normal comic book reviews, I offered a short list of titles I’m currently digging. Well, this week I decided to do a repeat of last week’s approach. So, here goes another short list of recommended comics:
X-Men No. 500 (Marvel): This milestone issue hits stands Wednesday and marks the first issue by the new writing team of Mat Fraction and Ed Brubaker. The comic also serves as an introduction to the X-Men’s new home in San Francisco. This issue’s story is a bit slow, but it’s a fun read and sets the stage for some really interesting future story concepts.
X-Men: Legacy No. 214 (Marvel): I really wanted to hate X-Men: Legacy because when it was announced it seemed like a superfluous X-book. But the engrossing storylines created by writer Mike Carey — which delve into the X-Men’s past and the team’s present-day exploits — and clean art by Scott Eaton help to make this book an essential read.
Rogues’ Revenge No. 1 (DC): It’s no secret that DC has been publishing some sucky books for the last few years — even Final Crisis has been lackluster so far. Leave it to writer Geoff Johns to make an excellent Crisis spin-off. Starring Flash’s arch enemies, the Rogues, this comic seeks to humanize and revitalize the band of villains. Reading Rogues’ Revenge is like picking up a copy of Johns’ incredible run on Flash from a few years ago. Johns’ old Flash art buddy Scott Kolins is handling pencil chores, too.
Trinity No. 7: Honestly, the writing on this comic can be quite continuity-heavy and the art’s a little better than decent, but I am damn-near addicted to it. And that’s merely because it comes out every week … and I’m a comic junkie. It’s sort of like crack.
