Batwoman: Detective Comics No. 857

Published by DC Comics. Written by Greg Rucka. Art by J.H. Williams III and Cully Hamner.

The Deal: It’s the latest issue of Detective Comics starring the (relatively) new incarnation of Batwoman. And bringing up the rear is a second feature starring the new female version of The Question.

The Good/The Bad: This is, without rival, the prettiest comic book on the stands today. We’ll be looking back on the groundbreaking work that artist J.H. Williams is doing for years to come. As pretty as the art is, however, I find myself enjoying the story in the second feature more. Maybe I just feel like I know The Question better than Batwoman.

The Verdict: This comic is definitely worth the $3.99 price tag. Buy it.

Other comics worth reading: DC’s weekly Wednesday Comics series just wrapped, and it was probably my favorite weekly from the company ever. The crowning glory of the title — which presented comics in a newspaper-strip style — was that it proved some old/forgotten characters (like Kamandi) could actually be cool. On top of that, it was a treat to see superstars like Neil Gaiman, Kyle Baker, Joe Kubert and Paul Pope working on a regular title.

On a more giggle-centric note, this year’s edition of The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror is insane and funny as shit. The comic features some truly sick/bizarre/hilarious short pieces by guys like John Kerschbaum, Jordan Crane and Jeffrey Brown, among a bunch of others. Pick it up.
