Another week, another stack of comics — here’s a look at a few titles I snagged:

Drunk No. 1: I was digging this book when I first got wind of the concept: “A comic about bar stories.” Fortunately, the stories inside the anthology-style graphic novel — ranging from the straightforward to the esoteric — are executed in an excellent fashion. Stand-out tales in the tome include Ivan Brunetti’s on-the-money one-page strip “Drunks,” Evan Dent’s twisted “Hot Dog Millionaire” and the autobiographical-esque “Bus Date” by Tori Morris — but there’s a whole lot to like here. Blackest Night No. 3: DC Comics’ summer blockbuster event marches on into the fall, and so far so good. The current issue of the eight-issue limited series is packed with action and “Oh shit!” moments, but the story appears to be moving rather slow. Three months in and this thing still feels like a long chase sequence. I hope we get a more expansive view of the conflict soon.

Dark Reign: The List – Daredevil No. 1: It’s the latest in Marvel’s series of one-shots that detail efforts by Norman Osborn (former Green Goblin and current government bigwig) to eliminate heroes he’s come to define as ongoing threats. This issue, the focus is on Daredevil, and it’s a decent enough comic; however, a lot of what’s found on these pages seems like setup for future DD adventures.
