It’s hard to take your eyes off the work of Michael B. Platt. In his current Charlotte-based exhibit, Spirits & Spaces (on view until Oct. 3), Platt — a “visual storyteller” — makes use of digital photography and the printing process to express traces of the human spirit. The resulting images register as both frightening and comforting … and demand a double (or triple) take.

$5-$8. Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m. The Harvey B. Gantt Center For African American Arts + Culture, 551 S. Tryon St. 704-547-3700. www.ganttcenter.org.
