Buying legal weed in Colorado with a North Carolina ID

Despite the naysayers warning of apocalypse, Colorado legalized recreational marijuana sales yesterday sans pot pandemonium. I took a stroll over to Alternative Medical Supplies in Black Hawk, Colo., to see what exactly is going on here. And, let’s be honest, to find out how much weed I can buy with my North Carolina ID.

Approaching the dispensary, I was shaking. It feels really counter-intuitive to walk into an establishment selling what you know and have always known to be illegal. Despite the jitters from the general anxiety as well as the snow, here’s what I found out from Abigail at the counter and her co-workers:

Nonresidents are severely restricted, in comparison to Colorado residents, to how much they can buy. Those with North Carolina identification (or any other out-of-state driver’s license or ID) can only buy up to a quarter per day. PER DAY! Poor out-of-staters. They’re not able to get the ounce per day that Colorado residents can.

I don’t know what kind of calculator they used to figure out how much THC one person can handle, but a quarter per day is more than enough. You’d be high for days and nonfunctional if you’re sparking up a quarter per day. Holy shit! Regardless, this is a monumental time in history. Many will be watching Colorado to see if it makes good on its jobs, tourism and tax revenue income projections to the tune of $67 million in 2014.
