CMPD chief Rodney Monroe will discuss the controversial security cameras installed around Charlotte during the Democratic National Convention at today’s City Council meeting. He’ll argue the effectiveness of the cameras – bought with the help of a $50 million federal government grant before September’s event – in preventing and reporting crime and also address any ethical concerns council members may have about keeping them around.

  1. For the idiots who say “If you aren’t doing anything wrong why do you care?”:

In 1970 the federal government passed the unconstitutional RICO Act. It blurs the line between federal and state law enforcement and allows the government to seize any property that they feel was the proceeds of a crime whether or not it was actually stolen. Nobody cared because it was just for use against organized crime. It has since been used against:

    The Hells Angels Motorcycle club,
    The Catholic Church,
    The Key West Police Department,
    Michael Miliken for insider trading,
    Major League Baseball,
    Pro Life Organizations,
    Etc.

In 2001 Congress passed the blatantly unconstitutional USAPatriot Act. Nobody cared because it is just going to be used against terrorists. It has since been used against:

The webmaster of a fan site for the television show Stargate SG-1,
To investigate alleged potential drug traffickers without probable cause,
FBI issued tens of thousands of “National Security Letters” and obtained one million financial records from the customers of targeted Las Vegas businesses,
Public libraries have been asked to turn over their records for specific terminals,
    Etc.

THAT is why I care even though I am not doing anything wrong.

  2. Some people can turn even a cat up a tree article into an excuse to slam President Obama.

Yes, I did vote for him. I will vote for a Republican again, as I have in the past, when they stop letting their craziest people rise to the leadership positions.
