It says all you need to know about GOP congressional candidate Tim D’Annunzio’s extremism (and I’m being kind) that Jack Hawke left the campaign. Hawke, a former N.C. GOP chairman and longtime political strategist, was an advisor for former Gov. Jim Martin’s campaign as well as for Pat McCrory, but he has left D’Annunzio’s campaign over the latter’s rants on his “Christ’s War” blog. Hawke says he advised D’Annunzio to drop the blog, and the candidate did so for awhile. When it reappeared, though, that was too much for Hawke, as he told the Observer’s Jim Morrill.
D’Annunzio has invested more than a half-million dollars in his own campaign for the GOP nomination in the race for the congressional seat currently held by Democrat Larry Kissell. So far, TD has gained notoriety by some of his over-the-top actions and statements.
OK, let’s be honest here. “Over-the-top actions and statements” doesn’t do justice to the apparent megalomania and paranoia of Tim D’Annunzio. Writing about his campaign, he said the coming battle will be fought against “The wicked (The Liberal Leftist Socialist Democrats and their beast in the news media). They want to destroy you. At what point are you going to realize this is a war to the death? This is a fight that is either the end of US [sic] or the end of them. I say it is the end of them and their evil world.” Nice balanced perspective there, Tim.
If that’s not apocalyptic enough for your taste, then check out my man Tim’s statement to a Stanly County GOP gathering: “This is a profound time, the most important time since 1776, and the last time we have a chance to do so peacefully. In 2010, the best we can hope for is to stop the socialist move.” This happened just a little before the D’Annunzio campaign event that’s earned him the most notoriety: a Machine Gun Social fundraiser held last month, in which donors got to shoot Uzis and MP-5 submachine guns for a donation of $25 per clip.
Crazy enough for you now? No? Well, how about attacking another GOP candidate, Harold Johnson, a well-known, conservative former Charlotte sportscaster, as part of “the left-wing media”? Or storming out of a candidate forum because he was asked to follow the agreed-to rules of the debate? Or saying he’s against repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell because it would “infringe on states’ rights” (Huh?!). Or how about laying out a “four-year plan” to “revitalize” the U.S. government, partly by abolishing the departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Energy, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Transportation, Treasury, and Homeland Security”? And don’t forget the effort, after the government has been “revitalized” a la D’Annunzio, to “educate people, starting with our children, to the greatness of our heritage and our true foundations of God and our constitution,” followed by “Then we must never let this happen again.” Re-education camps, anyone?

How could we possibly have a congressman represent us when he storms off stage like that. Our elected officials need to have poise and respectability (which a lot of them seem to be lacking). I looked at the Lou Huddleston website where he explains his half of the story. It seems as if Lou answered the question based on his own beliefs and did nothing or said nothing that attacked D’Annunzio. I am a conservative who hasn’t made up my mind on who to vote for in the primary until now. It is definitely going to be Huddleston. Through visiting his site I learned he had military experience (he is a retired Colonel) and helped start a very successful small business. This is just the kind of guy we need representing us!

Looks like Lou Huddleston is the right guy. A vote for D’Annunzio is a vote for Kissell.

We are a representative constitutional Republic Rosa. Democracy and being a Democrat used to be slurs in the time of our founding fathers. Democrat basically means mob rule. The end result of mob rule is tyranny and then anarchy. A little reading would help to cure your case ignorance Rosa/Mark.
