Dick Cheney continues to show why he’s a master of alternate reality. You remember the flowers that were thrown at the feet of U.S. soldiers in Iraq when they were “greeted as liberators,” right? And the sure-fire fact that Saddam had nuclear weapons? For Cheney, those things really happened. Why? Because reality is whatever he says it is. So it’s no big surprise that in a new interview with Politico, the former VP said he doesn’t think the Bush administration is responsible for conditions in Afghanistan.
For those with as deep a memory hole as Cheney, here’s a quick reminder: Bush/Cheney sent in troops to overthrow the Taliban and capture Osama bin Laden in late 2001; but then they cut and run in that country in order to devote the full force of the U.S. military — and half the money in the U.S. treasury — to fight in a country that wasn’t threatening us, and leaving Afghanistan to do whatever. But now Cheney says the Bush/Cheney gang isn’t responsible for the situation in Afghanistan. Coming on the heels of a Senate report detailing how the Bushies failed to nab bin Laden because of their incredibly shoddy planning and — here’s that old familiar Bush trait again — incompetence, it takes a mountain of gall for Cheney to divert blame for that forsaken country’s state. But then again, it’s Cheney. There’s a reason Republican leaders in Washington are voicing frustration over Cheney’s occasional appearances during which he invariably attacks Obama, lies through those crooked teeth, and lowers the GOP’s approval ratings once again. It’d be nice if someone in the GOP told Cheney to lay low, but so far no one has.
