Does New Gallery of Modern Art’s upcoming stone • earth • paper exhibit remind you of the ol’ rock-paper-scissors game or is it just me ( I keep having to double check myself every time I write the title)? Slated to open with a reception on Feb. 23, the exhibit debuts new works by artists Patricia Leighton and Del Geist.
Leighton and Geist — both current UNC Charlotte Artists-in-Residence at McColl Center for Visual Art — have been commissioned by the Charlotte Area Transit System’s Art-In-Transit program to work with the UNCC art students to create sculptures for future light rail and campus sites.
Leighton, who has showcased large-scale works across the globe (including countries as diverse as South Korea and her native Scotland), is described as paying close attention to aspects of history, the environment and industrialization in her artwork.
Geist, who has also displayed art abroad (including places like Germany, Papua New Guinea and South Korea), is putting his minor degree in geology to use by integrating stones like slate, sandstone and brick with his own steel constructions.
