A jude has denied a request from Republican lawmakers to give their lawyers until Oct. 17 to prepare arguments to intervene in lawsuits that challenge North Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage. Instead, lawyers have until noon today. Chief U.S. District Court Judge William Osteen Jr. could strike down Amendment One before the start of the weekend.
Today is also the deadline to register to vote in the November elections. “The state has for years allowed voters to register during the early voting period and cast a ballot in the same visit. I don’t understand the Conservative apoplexy over gay marriage. A marriage is a family unit that shares the assets and responsibilities of a partnership. Members are able to make decisions for each other when disabled, automatically inherit assets on the death of the other, file joint tax returns, and are equally liable for each others debts. Sex is a very small part of the equation, and denying the protections of marriage does not keep them from having sex.
In a land where more that 50% of marriages end in divorce, It does not seem that it is gay people who are destroying the concept of marriage.
