A grand jury’s decision that a police officer shouldn’t face charges over the death of Staten Island man Eric Garner has sparked anger and protests – along with a Twitter hashtag #CrimingWhileWhite, which talks about ways police treat people differently based on their race. The wide-ranging conversation started Wednesday evening, as some used it to describe their own peaceful run-ins with police that may have gone vastly differently had they not been white.
Fast-food workers in roughly 160 cities nationwide, including Charlotte, are set to walk off the job Thursday morning, demanding an industry-wide base wage of $15 per hour and the right to form a union. Thursday’s strike, the latest in a series of day-long labor actions, may be the largest work stoppage in the history of the industry. Charlotte’s strike took place at The Plaza and Eastway at 6:30 a.m.
