A flight was diverted back to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport shortly after taking off due to a security threat last night. The American Airlines flight left Charlotte after a layover between Orlando and Minneapolis on Monday night but was told to turn back due to the threat. Passengers said they were told to exit the plane and leave all of their belongings on board. The plane was searched with dogs and passengers took another plane to Minneapolis after retrieving their belongings.
The state disclosed a settlement on Monday in which the The Ritz-Carlton will refund all visitors who paid a 15 percent surcharge to stay at the hotel’s Charlotte branch during the CIAA tournament in February. The hotel has also agreed to pay $75,000 to the CIAA Scholarship Fund, pay $5,000 to the state and notify customers in advance in the future if any similar surcharges are being added to bills.
The South Carolina Senate voted 37-3 to remove the Confederate flag from a pole on the state Capitol grounds. The House is expected to vote today, and that vote is expected to be closer.
Filing for Charlotte elections began on Monday, and Charlotte City Council member David Howard and former Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioner Chair Jennifer Roberts were the first to file for the Charlotte mayoral race. Council member Michael Barnes is also expected to challenge current Mayor Dan Clodfelter in the Democratic primary. Two Republicans, Edwin Peacock and Scott Stone, have also announced.
A transformer failure left thousands of Duke Energy customers in Belmont without power overnight, according to the utility company. The power went out for about 4,200 residents at 7 p.m. on Monday, and Duke said they were able restore power to all residents by 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
