CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison says he’s concerned about a piece of the state budget that changes how school districts are funded. Districts will have to wait until the end of a legislative session – or later – to find out how much funding they get in a year, which Morrison says will impede teacher-recruitment efforts.
A man who moved from Liberia to Charlotte 15 years ago says seven of his 10 relatives back home, including his mother, sister, brother and nephews, recently died after contracting the Ebola virus. Saah Kanda says burial rituals that put people in close contact with infected individuals and the government’s lack of action have worsened the extent and spread of the disease. Ebola has killed 1,000 in West Africa.
America’s involvement in Iraq is far from over. President Obama authorized targeted air strikes in the country “to protect the besieged Yazidi minority and U.S. personnel in Iraq.” “‘Earlier this week, one Iraqi in the area cried to the world, ‘There is no one coming to help’,” said Obama, who has been reluctant to go back into Iraq having withdrawn in 2011. ‘Well, today America is coming to help.'”
Fighting has resumed in Gaza after a temporary cease-fire expired. “In Gaza City, the streets were empty by midmorning as most people stayed indoors, having hurried away from areas that were previously targeted. Israeli drones circled overhead.”
