I was sorry to hear about the death of British producer Simon Channing Williams, who passed away from cancer at the age of 64. A man of impeccable taste, Williams was perhaps best known for his frequent collaborations with writer-director Mike Leigh, including Topsy-Turvy and the recent Happy-Go-Lucky. He earned an Oscar nomination as the producer of the 1996 Best Picture nominee Secrets & Lies (his most successful venture with Leigh) and won British Film of the Year and British Producer of the Year awards for The Constant Gardener, which also earned my vote as the best picture of 2005. Away from the screen, Williams was involved in creating The Constant Gardener Trust, a charity which is in the process of providing schools and sanitary conditions in impoverished areas of Kenya (where the movie was filmed).
