Looking for a different kind of nightlife event — one that doesn’t just entail drinking and dancing? Well, you might want to check out PlayDate. Organized by Charlotteans Shenan Robinson and Latrina Harris (who are pictured below and own the event promotion company Unique Affairs), PlayDate (which pops off this Saturday) promises not to be your typical night on the town. Creative Loafing recently talked with Harris and got all the details about the upcoming event:

Creative Loafing: PlayDate is a relatively new concept to Charlotte. How would you describe the event to someone who’s never heard of it?

Harris: Play Date is an alternative to the typical night out. PlayDate provides a fun and exciting atmosphere where you can enjoy good food and cocktails, listen to a variety of music, socialize and meet great people all while playing games — from poker to chess, Twister to Uno, Hungry Hungry Hippos to Rockem Sockem Robots and everything in between!!

Besides making money, what motivated you to bring the event to Charlotte?

In a word: NEW. The concept is very creative, fresh, and represents what Unique Affairs is all about. Once we attended an event in Atlanta [where PlayDate started] we new we had to introduce it to Charlotte. We felt that this is exactly what Charlotte has been asking for.

Charlotte is known as a finicky market when it comes to attending events; what makes you think this will be a success here?

PlayDate’s concept is timeless. None of us have outgrown the fun of playing different kinds or games, whether it’s spades or Scrabble. In addition to the nostalgic and timeless element, this is an event that is extremely economy friendly. This is important to all of those who are being affected by the current state of the economy. The cost of general admission starts and ends at just $10, and we give 10 times more in entertainment.

How often do you plan to host PlayDates?

Once a month.

OK, give me all the details:

PlayDate Charlotte debuts Sat., April 18 at the Big Chill (911 East Morehead St.) at 9 pm. Dress code is relaxed and tasteful. We want you to come prepared to play!
