North Carolina doesn’t have the greatest record when it comes to protecting women. It’s a misdemeanor to hit a woman, but a felony to hit an animal. But, a judge in Gaston County got it right this week when he denied the request of a preacher, who is a registered sex offender, to be removed from the sex offender registry because it is hurting his ministry.

According to NewsChannel36, Thomas Lee Cavender, a Bessemer City pastor, has been on the registry for a decade.

The women wept Monday afternoon as they described memories of molestation and pleaded with a judge to keep Thomas Lee Cavender on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The 60-year-old Cavender is a self-described preacher and evangelist who has been on the registry for 10 years after a conviction on sexual battery and a brief stint in prison.

One woman told Cavender she forgave him but didn’t want him to become a threat to others.

Gaston County Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell denied Cavenders’ request for at least another year.

Score one for North Carolina women.

  1. Perhaps someone needs to explain the concept of forgiveness to the woman.

“I forgive him but want his punishment to continue”? That doesn’t sound to me like she has forgiven him. It sounds like she is trying to sound like a better person than she actually is.
