"Pay no attention to the imbecile behind me." — John McCain and Frothy Santorum in better times

Former U.S. Senator Rick “Frothy” Santorum has long been known for letting his ambition outrun his smarts, but his latest gaffe is so absurd, it could damage his already none-too-rousing presidential campaign. Yesterday, Santorum outdid himself in the self-parody department, telling a radio interviewer that Sen. John McCain — who is probably the most famous victim of wartime torture in U.S. history — “doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works.”

Santorum’s incredible gaffe came in response to McCain’s recent Washington Post op-ed in which he condemned waterboarding and reaffirmed his belief that torture techniques have no place in U.S. policy. The best reaction we’ve seen to Santorum’s delightfully dimwitted quote came from Mark Salter, an aide to Sen. McCain, to wrote on Facebook: “For pure, blind stupidity, nobody beats Santorum. In my 20 years [working] in the Senate, I never met a dumber member, which he reminded me of today.” You know, I was going to write more about this matter, but you really can’t improve on Salter’s remarks, so we’ll see you tomorrow.

  1. Anyone who believes that torture forces truth from the victim is delusional.

A person being tortured will say whatever he thinks the torturer wants to hear if it will make him stop. You can make an innocent person admit to anything.

Only a moron is fooled by changing the name of something, like changing “torture” to “enhanced interrogation”.

It’s funny that we can see that when other countries do it. When an American pilot is shown on foreign television claiming that his country’s invasion is a criminal act and he is sorry he participated, do you believe it? Or do you understand that he was tortured into saying that.

Anyone who supports torture in no better than any other criminal.

I think the same thing when I hear “Quantitative Easing” or “Climate Change”.

Listening to Rick Santorum speak is torture.

  3. I would argue that Helen Chenowith was more stupid than Santorum, but she may have been more than 20 years ago.
