In a letter sent last week to the U.S. Department of Homeland Securitys Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties , the Southern Poverty Law Center demanded reform for Mecklenburg Countys 287(g) program. What lit the spark of the SPLCs outrage? That would be the case of Abel Moreno, the 29-year-old Mexican immigrant who, upon trying to report the sexual abuse of his girlfriend by the now former Charlotte police officer Marcus Jackson, was instead taken to jail and kept there for six days, as reported by Charlotte-based Spanish-language newspaper Mi Gente. He was only released from jail after others came forth to speak out against Jackson and his history of sexual misbehavior while on duty.
We call upon the Department to investigate this case and to terminate the 287(g) agreement with Mecklenburg County We also call upon the Department to enact clear regulations to protect crime victims and witnesses from being placed in immigration proceedings when they come forward in good faith to report crime. The absence of such guidelines leads to further abuse of victims, undermines trust in the police, and leads to greater crime against people who are perceived to be undocumented.
According to CharMeck.org, the program is run by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and allows law enforcement officers to carry out the same duties as Federal ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Agents. This is hardly the first time 287(g) has been scrutinized. Public opinion varies between those who believe 287(g) is an efficient way to punish criminals for their crimes, and those who believe that it unfairly racially profiles and targets the Latino community.
Other counties, like Wake, have also implemented its policies. The SPLC, however, is of the opinion that North Carolina
Is a locality which has shown a brazen lack of regard for the civil rights of its community members. Clearly, Mr. Moreno should not have been arrested. Once it was determined that he was falsely arrested, he should have been released immediately A February 2009 study by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Immigration and Human Rights Policy Clinic at UNC-Chapel Hill explains in detail how the program in North Carolina fails to adhere to its own legally defined standards. As part of the Memorandum of Agreement signed with the federal government, local law enforcement is required to implement complaint mechanisms, publicize officials functions, outline how certification takes place, provide for interpreters, create a steering committee and even allow for modification of the memorandum itself with public input. None of this has taken place in North Carolina.
Immigration reform has become one of the nations most sensitive issues, with Arizonas recent changes in legislation making the most headlines. Closer to home, it is becoming ever more clear that a change has got to come.

The southern poverty law center is nothing more than a hate group itself. The only thing is that they hate Americans that try to uphold our laws.
Is it wrong to profile babies by offering them milk formula. Is it wrong to target students with loans for school?
Most of the illegal aliens happen to be hispanic but that has nothing to do with enforcing the laws. If you stop someone that does not speak english, does not have any identification and has a mexican flag hanging in his car then chances are you have an illegal alien on your hands. You have to ask our police officers to be blind to crime so we can paste a non-profiling label on our efforts.
Just like an accident victim we need to stop the bleeding first by fencing off our borders. Then we can grant a 4 or 6 year work visa to the illegals. They can then use this time to make arrangements to become a citizen by normal processes or save up for their eventual move back to their home. As for the children they need to go where their parents go. This will solve the anchor baby problem. If they have an American relative they can stay with then that would be acceptable too.
I think this would be a resonable way to handle the situation.
You are a cold heartless man, Frank.
I used to know a man, an American born citizen, who grew up in a home where the family spoke Greek. They were all Americans, and all spoke fluent English, but with an accent. He was a cook in a restaurant that was owned by a Greek family.
Every time INS (now known as ICE) came around to harass the kitchen staff, he wound up at the police station waiting for someone to bring him his birth certificate.
Why don’t you as HIM what he thinks of your xenophobic profiling?
I bet you wouldn’t think it was such a good thing if the police kept hauling you off in handcuffs because you didn’t have a green card.
“Is it wrong to profile babies by offering them milk formula.”
The above is a question, therefore it warrants a question mark (?).
These incidents must be incredibly embarrassing for you, Frank. Please come to the library as soon as possible and I will personally help you review your grammar.
We can go over the appropriate use of analogies at no additional charge.
You would think the moron would eventually carry his papers with him. Why should anyone feel sorry for him after the first incident. In my example I said they do not speak english. I did not say speaking english with an accent. You only help support my case thanks.
I need to have my papers myself when I am driving a car or flying so no one is immune or special when it comes to having your papers.
Go back to school librarian and they will teach you that there is a time and a place for formal communications. Of course you do not understand this. This is why you continue to look like a fool correcting grammar in this forum. Now go find another windmill hehe.
The SPLC has made millions off false accusations. People on the inside have reported racial discrimination BY the SPLC. Read this expose by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist:

Nowhere in this article does it say that Mr. Moreno is here LEGALLY, much less that he is a citizen.
If authorities refuse to investigate and deport those who are here illegally, that is unequal protection under the law. Apparently, if one is an illegal alien, one is offered a free pass on having to observe the laws of this country.
The mexican mantra
All of the laws should be enforced equally, regardless of race, religion, and/or national origin. That is with the exception of mexicans, and they should be above the law and exempt from the law. And the only purpose that a tonto gringo serves is to pay taxes to support the superior and noble mexican.
Anyone who disagrees with this philosophy is Xenophobic and a Racist.

George Orwell, Animal Farm, ch.10, 1945
The real reason that illegal immigration exists in the United States of America is that the government and corporations want it. It is part of the strategy to Divide and Conquer and stay in power.
In the 60s, the average American started taking a good, hard look at what our government and corporations were doing. Americans finally started to wake up from our long slumber, and when we did, we were appalled at what we saw. We started to unite; it did not mater if one was white, brown, black, red, or yellow, we were all Americans. We had a common enemy, the corrupt: entrenched bureaucrats, professional politicians, and corporations. They saw the writing on the wall, the days of business as usual were numbered.
To combat this new awakening in the American public, the strategy bureaucrats, politicians, and corporations adopted was a three-pronged attack: mass immigration, legal and illegal; introducing the concept of multiculturalism; and creating the mechanism to fund legal challenges to any attempt by the American people regain control.
Up until the mid 60s, the United States of America had a conservative immigration policy that allowed approximately 100,000 to 200,000 foreign nationals a year into the U.S. Then it was changed. Over a million foreign nationals a year were allowed to enter the U.S. legally and illegally. There are now approximately 11 million foreign nationals illegally in the U.S. This demonstrates that illegal immigration is condoned, and is even rewarded by the government through social programs and amnesty. The new immigrants were encouraged to settle in separate communities, and retain their culture and language, discouraging assimilation into American culture and any attempts to define themselves as simply American.
The birth of multiculturalism was the next part of the attack on American solidarity. Ethnic studies was introduced on campuses and schools around the country, and later became a mandatory class. Ethnic studies evolved into ethnic clubs, and later departments based on race, e.g. Black studies, Latino studies, etc. Ethnic studies gave birth to a quasi-nationalism based on race. The hyphenated American was born. This created further conflict and division among the American people.
The final prong of this attack was the use of foundations, e.g., the Ford Foundation, etc. to funnel money from corporations to special interest groups, e.g., MEChA, La Raza, and their variants. These in turn fund special interest law firms, e.g., MALDEF, to challenge any attempt by the American citizen to regain control of our country. The American citizens have repeatedly: introduced legislation, e.g. prop 187, SB 1070, etc, voted on it, and had it overwhelmingly approved by the voters, only to have these special interest law firms challenge the legislation, tie it up in the courts, then have it struck down by a judge with a political agenda. The final insult happened when the elected officials failed to appeal that lower court decision and fight to have the will of the people protected, as they are required by law to do.
The idea of Divide and Conquer has been used throughout history to consolidate and retain power, and it is an act of war against the American people, of all colors. It has created strife and division among the American people, and preventing them from presenting a unified front and wresting power from the current establishment. The corrupt: bureaucrats, politicians, and corporations, are still in charge.
tl;dr
DLP, if your Greek friend is an American born citizen why dosn’t he carry his diver’s license or SS card when asked to show id down at the police station. If he has been asked a number of times by the PD to show some form of identifiation why hasn’t he got the message yet? I carry my dl and SS card in my wallet because I drive everyday and it is mandated by law. The people you defend are in this country illegally and are violating the laws of this country. It makes no difference if they have committed ANY crime, misdemeanor or felony, the penalty for illegal immigration is deportation. Why can’t you understand that. Maybe your Greek friend is exploiting illegal alien workers because it is more profitable for him to do so. Does he pay minimum wage/OT, health insurance, workmans comp ins., etc, etc. Don’t think so.

Thanks for telling it like it is!
Only an illegal alien, anchor baby or idiot open border thinking American would call you cruel.

As an American citizen of Hispanic origin, I find the SPLC to be an organization of charlatans and grifters whose statements are to be suspected of being nothing but a fear mongering campaign to feed their cash donation drives.
That being said, the only reason why the Moreno affair would elicit a request to terminate the 287-G program could only be if Moreno was an illegal alien and got caught at it. Now, the other side of the coin is that maybe Moreno was willing to go in knowing that he’d get caught in the 287-g program and would then create this particular situation to demand the termination of said program that only catches those illegal aliens who pass through the jail. One has to wonder why was it Moreno who came forward and not the “others came forth to speak out against Jackson and his history of sexual misbehavior while on duty”? Certainly a good question. Where were they and why did they not do their civic duty until Moreno was in 287-g custody?
BTW, DLP, My mom carried her green card with her wherever she went. Why, you may ask? Because since the 1940’s it has been the law of our country that all foreigners must carry their immigration documents with them AT ALL TIMES. Your Greek acquaintance just figured he was special and didn’t have to play by the rules.
What will end up happening in North Carolina is that the electorate will demand the passage of a bill of law similar to Arizona’s SB-1070, as will more and more states, until the illegal alien population saturates any state that has yet to pass such a law.
According to the Department of Labor, a more than 5% of the labor supply is “undocumented”. It does not take a rocket scientist or great statistician to figure out that if we were to enforce our laws pertaining to the arrival and departure or foreigners, both legal and illegal, and those that pertain to labor and wages, unemployment would go down and wages would go up. That is not what the small group that holds sway over our politicos would want as they might lose the reins of the country and we might end up with a more egalitarian economic situation while remaining a capitalist system. Just one that puts the well being of our citizens over that of foreign and domestic capital speculators.
“Why should anyone feel sorry for him after the first incident.”
Another question.
You’re a picture-perfect example of conservatism at its worst, sticking to your guns even when proven blatantly wrong by your more educated betters.
I’m sorry but I’m going to have to increase the price of your lessons. I’ll see you at the local library first thing in the morning.
The SPLC, ACLU, La Raza and other such groups are nothing more than seditious, anti-America groups, some with strong Communist ties who for decades have tried to stop law-and-order Americans and police and sheriff’s deputies from doing their jobs protecting the public. The sick thing is…some of these groups are being backed by taxpayer money…

The SPLC is a fabulously successful money-making organization that puts idealistic camouflage on corporate greed.
Big business just looooves a continuous flow of cheap, exploitable labor it can turn to when native-born workers complain about low wages and benefits.
And Creative Loafing calls itself “progressive.” Heck, I’m so old, I remember when leftists actually sided with the workers.
The SLPC is a money-making organization? The Southern POVERTY Law Center? Seriously? Not sure where you get this idea from, but whatever …
‘Tis true. They’re sitting on a pile of dough worth $168 million. Shades of Scrooge McDuck!
