The lights will be dimming on the nightspot known as Mez, as the downtown venue will permanently close its doors on Jan. 27.

Located in the EpiCentre, Mez was a unique combination of restaurant, movie theater and nightclub all rolled into one. All three components often operated together like a well-oiled machine, as theater patrons were able to purchase meals and drinks in the restaurant or at the bar and take them into the lavish auditoriums. Yet the juxtaposition didn’t always work: Customers who paid high prices to venture to the Epicentre in order to check out a movie would often be turned away from then socializing in the bar area if they weren’t sporting the proper attire (sneakers were especially frowned upon).
Moving forward, though, such complications may no longer surface: While the restaurant and nightclub appear to be deep-sixed, a stand-alone movie theater is scheduled to open in the space next month. For now, the venue plans to end its tenure with – what else? – a late-night bash. The “End of an Era” party will be held starting at 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. DJ R Wonz will host the event, and the promoters will distribute over 300 pairs of sunglasses.

Good riddance!
With the Movie Theatre staying, I wonder if they are going to continue the 21+ after 9pm rule. I assume not, since the bar is part of MEZ. I actually think that’s a good thing
Either way, I enjoyed MEZ. I personally prefer my movie theatre experience to be separate from my nightclub experience, but I am glad I got a chance to experience this combination.
Uptown Movie Theatre…..check!
Epicentre Krispy Kreme……<------would love this if it happened
Well, they’d better keep the bar a part of the new theater concept, since that was undeniably a big contributor to its success. 21+ after 9pm is still fine by me as long as they lose or tone down the clubby snotty attitude (I never actually had problems myself there but have heard the horror stories).
My sneakers aren’t good enough for your dancefloor, your dancefloor isn’t good enough for my sneakers.
The FoxxBama economy claims another victim.
^ I shouldn’t feed the trolls, but since this particular article doesn’t specify, MAYBE you don’t know that this had nothing to do with a lack of business or with the economy. The place has done very well, but they were under sleazy ownership who have not paid all their bills, and the new owners of the Epicenter want to rid the place of the stink of Ghazi.
Sorry to disappoint you since you so clearly take pleasure in bad news when your party isn’t in power, but this isn’t a talking point for you.
Just remember: Conserva-trolls will make ANYTHING about Obama. Anything.
We all know EpiCentre dress codes are just thinly veiled racism. I hope all these places go out of business.
FWIW Erin, I agree that is a rampant issue at a lot of clubs in just about ANY city, but the two people I personally know who had been turned away from Mez were white, and I haven’t heard serious allegations about racist policy at any other place in the Epicenter. The now closed Butter at NCMF I do believe had almost openly racist door policies.
I have a full list of friends who have been turned away from EpiCenter establishments like Mez & Suite. Some were white, but wearing “urban or athletic gear” There is also a boycott page on facebook. But yeah, Butter was the worst.
I will never understand why people pay sky-high drink prices to listen to radio music in a place where people tell them what they can & cannot wear.
