The 2009 Goldman Environmental Prize winners were announced yesterday, and one of them has a lot of relevance to our area, particularly Duke Energy customers.

The Goldmans have been awarded for 20 years to honor environmentalists around the world, and comes with individual cash prizes of $150,000. The winner from North America is Maria Gunnoe, a West Viriginian activist who has been a leader in the struggle to end mountaintop removal coal mining. That type of “mining” has ravaged huge swaths of Appalachia and wrecked the lives of many of that area’s residents by creating toxic waste that has left toxic coal sludge in their yards and seeped into their groundwater. Duke Energy, which Charlotteans rely on for electricity — not that there’s a choice — supports mountaintop removal mining and uses coal derived from this horrendous process to burn in its power plants. If you want to let Duke know how you feel about their support of mountaintop removal mining, contact them at https://www.duke-energy.com/contact/contact.asp. 2. You should have cared sooner and allowed nuclear power. Its all the greenies that have helped to make coal the dominant power source.

This reminds me of when peta thought peper spray was hurting the bears when used to run them off. The government then banned peper spray use and we had to go back to the old fashioned method of stopping the bears. This was of course a bullet thru the head. So much for good the intentions.

Nuclear power solves 99% of our problems. Support nuclear power or just get out of the way because you just do not have a clue.
