In what-the-fuck-is-wrong-with-our-state and can’t-they-think-of-anything-better-to-do-with-their-time news: The N.C. General Assembly’s House of Representatives’ anti-LGBT amendment passed yesterday.

Bully for them. Assholes.

The issue now moves on to the Senate.

From QNotes:

The North Carolina House of Representatives passed today, 75-42, a proposed anti-LGBT state constitutional amendment that would ban marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships and other relationship recognition for same-sex couples.

The House took up the amendment after its rushed passage through the chamber’s Rules Committee earlier this afternoon. It came as another surprise move by Republican legislative leaders, who had previously announced, though sneakily, that the amendment would be heard today in a Senate committee. Sources say two GOP senators had excused absences, leaving the body without the votes for passage.

The newest version of the amendment, SB 514, moves the ballot date from November 2012 to the primary election in May 2012. Speaker of the House Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) said the date change was a way to “remove politics” from the issue.

“What we’re trying to do is respect the concerns of some who felt like this was purely politically-motivated,” Tillis said at the press conference. “I decided, consulting with a number of people, and we decided that this was the most acceptable form. It was a discussion that involved both chambers. There are some members who were inclined to support the bill and did feel like political considerations were an issue that might cause them not to vote for something they would otherwise support.”

GOP leaders had come under fire for placing the amendment on the ballot during next year’s presidential elections. Critics said they were merely attempting to increase conservative voter turnout.

  1. The self proclaimed “christians” score another hate point!! They are really in for a surprise one day when they feel the “heat” that the big hater Jerry Falwell is feeling right now!!

  2. To ALL the republicans who want limited government and dont want the gov poking its nose in your affairs, and are so outspoken aboput desiring to get rid of stupid rules and regulations – what gives? and why r u so fascinated with what people do in their bedrooms ???? it seems youre a bunch of lyin hypocrites, huh?

  3. I’m making my plans to relocate – perhaps to Australia or Canada. Canada has Marriage Equality nationwide – talk about practicing what the US preaches about “equal justice under law”!!! The US is on a downward spiral and this hatred of gays, immigrants, etc. is just a reflection of it.

  4. It doesn’t say bring me your straight tired, your straight poor and your straight huddled masses yearning to breath free.
When is this country going to rise up out of the the desire to judge everyone as they should be and not as they are.
I think the judgement of one’s soul and life style should be left up to that individual and God

  5. If we accept gay marriage, then what is next? Why not polygamy? If you say “no way!” On what basis? Why not marry dogs and cats? On what basis is it wrong? Why not incestrous marriage? On what basis is it wrong? The gay agenda is emboldening the pedophile agenda now! All the wreckless, sexual deviance needs to stop including gayism.

  6. Textbook logical fallacy there Sanity.

Then again, it’s not as if educated people have a problem with gay marriage, only the dumb and ignorant. Thanks for demonstrating that for us.

  7. So the NCGA wants a Constitutional amendment to ban something that is already illegal in the state? What happened to the focus on JOBS the politicians promised during the election? I guess that was yet another GOP LIE.

I wonder what conservatives want to put on the ballot next? Interracial marriage ban? School segregation? Jim Crow laws?

Conservatives wanted to keep slavery legal saying it’s biblical. Conservatives wanted “separate but (un)equal” because it was biblical. Conservatives wanted to ban interracial marriage because it was unbiblical. And now they’ve found their new target for their hate and bigotry.

Face it, conservatives, time and time again you have been on the wrong side of history.

  8. To “Sanity”: Excerpts from my column: That argument (about polygamy and incest) only makes sense if being homosexual is a choice. A number of studies have presented evidence of at least some genetic predisposition (or “orientation”) toward homosexuality. Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, concluded that “sexual orientation is genetically influenced but not hardwired” There are, as yet, no studies indicating that anyone is genetically predisposed to incest and/or polygamy.

As far as same-sex marriage leading to the legalization of incest and polygamy: Anti-gay bigots repeat this odd fantasy (or projection of their fears) all the time, but there’s not an iota of evidence to support it. Considering how many states and nations allow same-sex marriage, evidence should be easy to find, if it exists.

  9. I will never understand Conservatives’ fascination with other people’s sex lives.

It makes them voyeurs, doesn’t it?

  10. ^ I prefer coming back to that polygamy argument by saying “so what”? I don’t care if consenting adults want to get married in ANY configuration. The problem lies in that this usually occurs in sequestered cultish scenarios where it crosses the line into arranged/forced marriage, which is non-consensual and wrong.

I don’t see why consenting adults is such a weird place to draw the line. This maintains the illegality of bestiality and pedophilia, and probably 99.999999% of incest. Am I missing something?
