Tiger, ready to march to Duke Energy's hearing on Oct. 11

As promised in an earlier post, CL will be bringing you over the next couple of weeks voices from the occupation of Charlotte — individual participants, in their own words, talking about why they joined the local Occupy movement.

“Tiger,” who was born in Ecuador, has been at Occupy Charlotte’s camp every night as of this writing. The first night she slept on the ground. By the fourth night, she had a tent and had organized a mini-march to the Duke Energy rate hike hearing which was being held one block away at the Government Center.

She says she’s decided to become an occupier for several reasons: Health care concerns, corporate greed and unemployment. She’s particularly concerned about Charlotte’s air quality and says Duke Energy could do much more to make it better.

She spoke to us on the first night of the occupation: “Duke Energy has done so very little here in the Southeast to push towards clean energy. … They’re pushing towards three percent into renewables in the Southeast — here in Charlotte — by 2030. Three percent? Really? No. We need clean air, we need it now. There’s people … there’s kids getting asthma. My friend said that she spoke at a class and half of the class raised their hand and said they have asthma.”

Listen to Tiger, in her own words:

  1. Sent this to Vince Coakley of WBT Radio to respond…no response!
    Vince,

Hi. This is Mike..I’m a protester…You all put on fools that don’t speak for the majority or the heart beat of American’s…I listen..listen to Keith, Rush and You…you get sound clips of these fools and not the “real protesters”…it is plausible that these fool’s you all are getting sound bites from are “planted” to sound un-american…well, I tell you what we ‘American’s” think that you say you believe in. We don’t want free donuts, biscuits, free money and we aren’t envious of self-made wealthy people. What we ARE against.

    Our beef:
    (1) wealthy/elitist purchasing politicians for gain is not considered participating in American Democracy.

    (2) Banks aloud to have tarps/loans from the tax payers to use for gain-investments etc. for their gain. In a capitalist society it IS ok for a business to fail.

    (3) 1% of society controlling the NATION”S wealth..not their’s…my tax money is not their’s to use and control and give to their special insterest.

Please argue these points from a true American say you are!

I’m not for or against the Tea party or for any party..I consider myself an Independent….we don’t believe in the current dog and pony show.
I work and have been working for over 20 year’s straight…the middle class the “heartbeat” of America.
We will keep growing despite you all putting words and thought’s into your audience’s heads.
Just disgusted with the system and inequity of “special favor’s” theme,
    American Mike

  2. This is why the OWS movement (think bowel) will not succeed. They don’t have a central message. They have quickly departed from the “Hang the Dirty Rich B@stards” to embracing every ultra Left idea. In addition, they are now saying they don’t want the media attention. Smart on one hand as it limits the possibility of the idiots in their ranks saying really stupid stuff. Incredibly dumb on the other hand as how in the heck are they going to get their message across without the media? They expect this to be just an internet driven event? Not hardly. They dis the mainstream (re: Liberal) media and they are going to go from no coverage to negative coverage. Like the stupid girl in the photo above… it is obvious she doesn’t think about where the electricity is coming from when she turns up the thermostat in her living room on a cold day.
