Raise your hand if you give a flying damn whether Sarah Palin runs for president. On a day when cultural giant Steve Jobs died and the nation’s attention was increasingly gripped by the Occupy Wall Street protests, Palin’s announcement that she’s not running in 2012 got what it deserved: minimal coverage and a big collective shrug. I heard that the last person who still cared whether the former half-term governor would run left the country a few weeks ago, just after the death of the last guy who believed Palin could win a national political race.
Palin says a main reason she’s not running is — wait for it — her concern for her family. This woman, remember, is a relentless attention-hound. Those nearest to Palin have said her idea of “family values” is to largely ignore family members most of the time, although she gladly paraded the whole brood during the 2008 campaign. The only value Palin’s apparently taught her kids, particularly Bristol, is the value of supporting herself by being a vapid celebrity rather than doing anything useful.
Another reason for the non-candidacy? It’s mind-bending, but Palin said that not running for president will make her more “effective in a decisive role to help elect other true public servants to office” (my italics). How hilariously self-unaware can someone be? Resigning the governorship after only half of one term doesn’t exactly evoke images of public service for most people. I’m just saying.
Really, what else could Palin do but not run for president? She’s no Einstein, but even she has to know she would have zero chance of being elected — and on top of that, she would have to give up most of her public-speaking career, for which she has received anywhere from $10K to $100K per speech. What a shallow, conniving, tiresome, half-wit narcissist. Speaking of conniving half-wit narcissists, the other far-right celeb who reminds me the most of Palin is Glenn Beck. They’ll both say almost anything to keep their audience’s attention, they’re both conspiracy addicts, and they both exploit their fans’ gullibility to the max, turning their “conservative, patriotic, freedom-loving” views into an ongoing money machine.
This article appears in Oct 4-10, 2011.

I for one will sleep much better knowing that I don’t have to change my citizenship. Which is what I was prepared to do should this nincompoop by some cosmic chance actually ran & won the presidency.
Palin and Grooms have a lot in common. For one, they are both completely insane.
Geez, I wonder what political party the “journalist” John Grooms belongs to? After reading this pathetic article, I now remember why I think creative loafing is only good for lining my bird’s cage.
What a mipulative genius… now Palin can take all of the cash you guys gave her and live “financially” happy ever after.
Yep, all of you Palinites will struggle to pay your heat bill…in your double wides… while she lives in that beautiful mansion that you all paid for.
She asked for MORE MONEY (knowing darned well she wasn’t running) a couple weeks ago..PLEASE TELL ME YOU DIDN’T SEND IT……..
Her intentions were never pure…there is now way she could have stood up to ANYONE in a real debate..let alone Obama……AND SHE KNEW IT!!!!!!!
Maybe the nation will get lucky and Obama will decide not to run in 2012. Maybe focus on his family instead.
Ditto to Don. And thank you Mr. Grooms for giving me reason to never pick up ‘Creative Loafing’ again. Being partisan is one thing. Being a complete degrading asshole is another.
And, if you can command 100K, you are pretty damn smart. It may not mean you are intelligent, but making 100K for just talking, is pure business savvy. You write for a magazine I pick up outside a burrito joint. You wouldn’t understand that.
PS- the nation isn’t ‘gripped’ by the occupy Wall Street protests. Few give a rat’s ass about those either. In fact, most think they’re a joke.
Well, well, look at the kettle calling the pot black. Insane or stupid is the zealot left. A bunch of elite bureaucrats supported by a bunch of dummies who can’t figure out that they are being taken. Obama is the only president that has cried and cried in his soup about what the last administration did only to make it worse. Obama is a cry baby like the rest of the left whenever they don’t get their way. He single handily has made our nation a laughing stock.
It is also interesting how every time the going got tough he would take a trip out of DC or go on a vacation; recall the gulf spill as one example of missing leadership. Obama is an embarrassment, Palin has true leadership skills.
Obama had the Congress and Senate in his back pocket and couldn’t even come up with a budget for two consecutive years. Afraid to be held accountable and have no one to blame.
Katherine, thanks so much for your valuable insights, and welcome to the CL blog love nest!
One thing, though: You wrote, “If you can command 100K, you are pretty damn smart. It may not mean you are intelligent, but making 100K for just talking, is pure business savvy.” That, Ms. K, is a fundamentally sick view of ethics and, for that matter, of life. Hope you can live with it. So again, welcome — and come back any time!
What a happy day for America, now if could just get rid of Michelle Bachman.
Man do I love it when conservative comment spammers take a brief break from their incessant Obama smearing to get completely butthurt over any off color comments on Palin.
