Will someone please calm this woman down?

A few weeks ago, Jon Stewart noted that no matter how tough or depressing the news can be sometimes, “South Carolina is always there for us” to provide some comic relief. Well, that’s how we feel about Rep. Sue Myrick. Oil continues to gush into the Gulf, the Supreme Court nixes handgun bans in the world’s most violent advanced country, and school and library budgets are shredded nationwide, but “Wild Sue” comes through every time.

Myrick recently positioned herself in the vanguard of Muslimophobic Paranoiacs by claiming that Muslim interns in Congress were part of a terrorist cell or some such hogwash, and writing an introduction to an equally paranoid-without-basis book on, yes, Muslim terrorists infiltrating D.C. Now, Myrick has topped off her career of crazy. Sue is asking Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano to convene a task force — and make it snappy — to look into the possible presence of Hezbollah terrorists operating with Mexican drug cartels on the U.S.-Mexico border … OK, have you finished laughing yet? Sue’s evidence? Well, you see, she has a couple of photos of captured MS-13 gang members, and they have these tattoos, and one of them reads “Hezbollah,” and the other one is “MS-13,” written in Farsi. Myrick says, “Farsi implies a Persian influence that can likely be traced back to Iran and its proxy army, Hezbollah.” Yeah, and I know a woman with her name tattooed on her butt in Russian, so she’s probably a spy for Putin, right?

Sue got her neat tattoo photos because of her relatively new position on the House Intelligence Committee, a position that, she says, has made her privy to top-secret intelligence reports that, well simply scare her to death and make her want to yell, “Wake up, America!” That’s great, Sue, but, as we’ve said here before, there’s one more glaring fact that stands out: Other, more senior members of the Intelligence Committee have seen the same documents and reports you see, but you don’t see them getting all bug-eyed and trying to scare the bejesus out of the public.

Homeland Security spokesman Matt Chandler spoke about Myrick’s request yesterday, saying, “At this time, DHS does not have any credible information on terrorist groups operating along the Southwest border.” But, of course, Sue does have information, at least in her perpetually fearful mind — those tattoos are evil! — and that’s what matters to Sue. In fact, being scared of something — anything — has long been one of her hobbies. Throughout her political career, Myrick has seemed to almost need to be riled up or panicky about something.

I am not saying that Myrick is insincere — just the opposite, which is actually scarier. Myrick has always been what philosopher Eric Hoffer called a “true believer.” She truly believes all the wacked-out stuff she comes out with. She always has. If the goal of terrorism is to make us walk around in fear all the time, then we know of one congresswoman who gave terrorism its victory some time ago. And to my mind, that’s one of the best reasons to get her out of Congress.

  1. Ummm…first of all, religious muslims don’t tattoo anything, just as religious jews don’t. And secondly, lets think for a moment: if you were a member of Hezbollah trying to infiltrate the US, would you tattoo that on your body?

  2. What in the hell does Barack Obama have to do with rugs at the Mexican border? Oh, that’s right, the teabaggers accused him of blowing up and sinking the oil rig in the damn Gulf, so why should he not also be personally responsible for people who are praying on mini carpets in Mexico!

  3. “What I am wondering is why the CL has had nothing to say about the Blago trial and Sestack since these scandals could possibly sink the president.”

    God you’re funny.

I’ll be sure to repost this when Obama starts his second term.

  4. “Also why no reporting on the death of Democrat senator KKK Bird”

Senator Bird publicly admitted he was wrong and apologized for his racist past, something that Republicans Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond never did.

Your attempt to link the Democrats with the KKK is childish. Half the people in the South were racists during that time period.

  5. It’s not Hezbollah with the Tats, It’s MS- 13 with the word Hezbollah tatooed. The training in kidnapping and extortion the drug cartels received in Columbia, Central Ameica and now Mexico has been a mixture of Hezbollah and the U.S. military. This may not seem to be a grave situation north of the border states, but here in Houston and south of I-10 we are starting to see the real effects. If you know anyone who lives or travels to Mexico besides Cancun, ask them about the kidnappings and I am sure they will give you some interseting stories. The frequency of kidnappings has increased and so has the problematic areas.

  6. Hmmm … I guess since Mexico has arrested Jameel Nasr in Tijuana for attempting to establish a Hezbollah network last week, Sue Myrick doesnt’ sound so crazy after all.

  7. It’s not just Myrick claiming this. A quick search came up with a ha’aretz, jerusalem post and fox news article claiming the same. If true, it is profoundly concerning, and not just to conservatives. You liberals concern me almost as much as groups like hezbollah. The barbarians might quite literally be at the gates, and rather than standing with your neighbors and telling our government that the border should probably be secured, you provide cover for the terrorists by calling a congresswoman crazy. Hezbollah is essentially a subsidiary of Iran. Iran is currently building a nuke. That is bad. I feel like I’m telling my 8-month old boy that he shouldn’t eat dirt when I tell you that you shouldn’t politicize national security and you shouldn’t ridicule people who bring credible security threats to your attention. You Obamunists truly scare me because you’re not really adults and you have so much power. Please for god’s sake give adulthood a chance.

  8. Rep. Sue Myrick is at it again, in an election year, putting out a hit-and-run press release (and doing softball tv interviews with FOX on July 14) to assure us that she is vigilant against the threat of terrorism at home. (“Myrick Calls for Look into Terrorists on S.W. Border: Congresswoman Believes Hezbollah is in Mexico,” Observer, June 30, 2010.) Ah, but she was not available for a real press interview, in which she would have had to answer detailed questions about her notions.

“I believe Hezbollah and the drug cartels may be operating as partners on our border,” she wrote to the secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. That department’s spokesman replied that the U.S. “does not have any credible information on terrorist groups operating along the Southwest border.”

One then has to wonder where Myrick got current information on the “tattoos” that she cites to prove her suspicions. She has denied receiving any “intelligence briefing” on the threat. Yet, she is a member of the House Intelligence Committee!

It should be obvious that Myrick is out to spread fear among her
constituents, while increasing fundraising opportunities among Zionist organizations.

  9. I see that a lot of invective is being hurled at the usual suspects. This makes for great sport at the expense of others, but the person in question isn’t the issue. For those here who think this is all “horseshit” I have to ask, “what if it’s true?”

Instead of killing the messanger, why not instead see if the assertion is true? I’ve done a bit of research myself, and this story is being reported by different media outlets other than Fox, Ha’retz, and all the other so-called scurillous media. When does the truth become acceptible; when it agrees with your political preference? That’s odd, don’t you think and rather bigoted.

So, what then? Does this have to be reported by The Huffington Post to get noticed and taken seriously?

I say, let’s find out what the facts really are. If it’s baseless, then fine; we’ve done our homework. If it is true, then we need to band together as fellow citizens and work together. We’ve been divided for too long. Frankly, this scares the hell out of me (among other things happening in the world right now).

In short, I’d like to ask all of the naysayers to prove their point because it is important to know the truth. If you know for a fact that Hezbollah isn’t in Mexico, then please provide the facts and sources so we can confirm.
