The North Carolina House approved a bill that bans texting while driving, and the amazing thing is that some people are griping about it. Opponents, including some of the nine House members who voted against the bill, say the ban is unnecessary since reckless driving is already against the law. By that logic, of course, it shouldn’t be necessary to prohibit drinking and driving, but hey, some people just can’t think straight.

The bill still has to pass the state senate and be signed by the governor in order to become law, but that seems a foregone conclusion. Personal experience tells me that there are lots of inattentive, distracted, clueless, spaced out, whatever you want to call them, drivers on our roads. It follows that it’s reasonable to place some restrictions on an activity, like driving, that is so widespread and so potentially dangerous. Here are more activities performed while driving, all of which I’ve seen on the roads at various times, that should also be banned by lawmakers: changing shirts, applying eye make-up, plucking eyebrows, shaving, brushing teeth, flossing, holding a pet that is between the driver and the steering wheel, mixing drinks, hitting a child in the backseat, singing with eyes closed, reading, and knitting.

  1. Let’s face it. Texting while driving causes accidents and sometimes even death. Why chance it. It really isnt worth it. There is a service available that allows for hands-free texting and emailing. Financial Destination has a service called FDIVoice that provides that service. They have a video about it at http://www.fdivoice.com/visionary
