Ashton Kutcher is racing CNN and Britney Spears to become the first Twitter user with 1 million followers. First problem, Kutcher challenged CNN via Ted Turner. Turner stepped down in 2006. Second problem, Britney Spears isn’t paying attention.

The 31-year-old actor recently threw down the gauntlet, challenging CNN and its founder, Ted Turner. In a Web video posted earlier this week, Kutcher said he would ding-dong-ditch Turner’s house if he beat CNN to 1 million. (For those unfamiliar with the classic adolescent prank, ding-dong-ditch is when you ring someone’s doorbell and run away.)

Kutcher later promised a “Guitar Hero” video game to his millionth follower, before quickly realizing it would be difficult to identify such a person.

What does the Twitterverse have to say about the race? Here’s a small sample:

“I want to follow Ashton Kutcher on twitter, just so that I can unfollow him when he hits 1M. Who’s with me?” wrote Annie Lohr.

CoolFroodDude says Kutcher is a moron.

Ida Puopolo is encouraging Twitterers to unfollow CNN, Tweeting, “UNFOLLOW @CNNBRK they were so biased in their reporting yesterday of Tea Party plus we want @aplusk to win war of hit million.”

Pimping out the millionth follower is obscene,” wrote Francis Specker.

“Do you really want to live in a world where Ashton Kutcher beats CNN in followers?” asks Calliedeer (a.k.a. Callie Carmichael, a CNN employee).

  1. Hi,

I did tweet about Ashton Kutcher, which I redacted, so the above link that is attributed to me doesn’t work anymore. I had second thoughts about Mr. Kutcher when I realized that when he reached 1 million followers a charity would benefit. I think it’s an internet faux paus to talk about numbers of followers. But if it is for a good cause, or benefits someone in need, why not? I support @aplusk and hope he is a good steward of that many followers.
