Well, this is nice news. Hopefully the kids will have fewer junk food choices now so they’ll actually eat the healthier food instead of wasting it. I’m also hopeful this will lead to composting programs at publicly funded schools, and maybe even community gardens. Oh, and since I’m dreaming out loud: Can we get all of this produce from local farmers?

State agencies will get more federal funding to provide fresh fruits and vegetables at schools, the Department of Agriculture announced on Wednesday.

The $48 million increase in funding for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program represents a 40 percent increase since the last fiscal year.”Improving the health and nutrition of our kids is a national imperative and by providing schools with fresh fruits and vegetables that expand their healthy options, we are helping our kids to have a brighter, healthier future,” a USDA statement quoted Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack as saying.

  1. Going down the path of lets remove all choices so they will have to eat what we give them will fail like every other socialist idea. Kids will just pack their lunch at home or leave school for subway or something.

Lets wait an see what percentage of kids eat school lunch after a bad idea like this is enacted.

Human nature, have the liberals not figured this out yet?

  2. Thanks Billy Bob.

The first thing I thought of doing was writing a satirical response acting like some right-wing loon complaining that giving kids healthy meals was somehow part of a socialist agenda and that schoolchildren were going to start parading around regurgitating innane slogans like “DON’T TREAD ON ME,” and reading John Locke.

You took care of that for me though.

  3. Wes, too bad you didn’t try something new, like having a point to one of your posts. You’re degree of thought makes Rhi Bowman look like a Plato.

Why don’t you explain how successful the existing rules and expenditures have been for students’ health?

  4. The existing rules and expenditures? What do you want, the Little Debbie and frozen cheeseburger budget? You are aware that childhood obesity is an epidemic in this country, yes? Childhood diabetes is also on the rise as a result of the piss poor diets most of them have. Maybe our educational institutions should help children learn healthy eating habits as well as math and science?

Oh sorry, I’m asking questions (that’s Socrates by the way)instead of the usual foaming at the mouth, us-against-them rhetoric you right-wing crazies seem to be so fond of, let me simplify it for you.

You see, when presented with actual facts people like yourself choose to ignore them and go about spouting the same braindead crap regardless.

I’m not going to get into some little e-debate with a mindless, faceless drone that’s incapable of operating on nearly the same intellectual level, it’s much easier to simply ridicule and walk away. It’s not like you types are capable of critical thought or changing your mind unless you hear it from Fox News first.

Only the willfully fat and stupid would be opposed to making fresh fruit and vegetables available to schoolchildren.

  5. So instead of being a pointless a-hole why don’t you answer my specific question? Are we spending money on this now? How much? How is it working? Where does it come from?

  6. BTW, I never said fresh fruits and veggies shouldn’t be available. I believe they’re available today. Only an ignorant dolt would blindly go along with more and more waste because they’re too lazy to go beyond the headline. There are no bills called “Wasting money in the name of Clean Air” or “Stealing from taxpayers to buy re-election with an unnecessary project”. You may have to look deeper to see real results and unintended consequences.
