Check out these events going down in Charlotte and the surrounding area this weekend— as selected by the folks at Creative Loafing.

Fri., April 10

Music: Unleash your ears to a set of home-fried country rock by Andy the Door Bum (aka Andy Fenstermaker or the man in the Milestone booth) at the Milestone.

Art: Head to Mint Hill Arts to check out the opening reception of the Judy Mizell: Retrospective exhibition, featuring watercolor paintings.

Benefit: Make your way to The Big Chill for “White Chocolate” The Inaugural All White Affair, sponsored by Godiva Chocolates. The party will feature music from DJ Flemingo and more. Proceeds will go to benefit Cancer research via The UNC Lineberger & Cancer Research Alliance Foundations.

Sat., April 11

Theater: Expect to laugh, as things get heated during Southern Rapture at Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte. The play highlights the late Charlotte Repertory Theatre’s production of Angels in America, which caused controversy in the Q.C.

Comedy: For laughs, check out performances of Robot Johnson’s sketch comedy at Charlotte Comedy Theatre in The Graduate.

Special Event: Express yourself or just watch other folks do it at the Gumbo Show at Area 15 in NoDa. The event features live performances, spoken word, music, singing, dancing, painting, comedy and more. Gumbo soup is also served.

Sun., April 12

Art: Stop by Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique and browse the store, as well as its newest exhibition, titled Short Fictions by Cara Ober with featured potter Barbara Chadwick-Bland.

Theatre: In performances of On The Verge at Winthrop University, three Victorian ladies set out on a journey through Africa and beyond, only to discover much more than just the art of traveling.

Food: The Tavern on Park offers typical upscale bar appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. Try the Cuban sandwich and save room for desserts, which include a rich chocolate layer cake.
