Check out these events going down in Charlotte and the surrounding area this weekend— as selected by the folks at Creative Loafing.

Fri., May 1

Art: You don’t have to go to Elm Street for a nightmare. Instead, visit Green Rice Gallery for the opening reception of Persistent Nightmares. The exhibition features black and white abstract drawings inspired by artist Andrea Worley’s bad dreams.

Music: Head to the Neighborhood Theatre tonight for the Fools Brigade benefit, which will feature an array of local musicians and their take on Rolling Stones classics. All proceeds go to Jacob’s Ladder Job Center.

Theater: It’s one big striptease, when unemployed steel workers take their booties to the stage in performances of The Full Monty at Theatre Charlotte.

Sat., May 2

Special Event: Today a variety of comic book shops will celebrate Free Comic Book Day. Make sure you make an appearance, in order to grab up the comic must-haves.

Theater: Performances of Love Letters at Central Piedmont Community College’s Pease Auditorium might just leave you wishing you were better at keeping in touch.

Festival: Enjoy live beach music from Tsunami Wave Riders, Sea Cruz and The Embers, as well as rides, volleyball, arts and crafts, and more at Beach Fest Matthews.

Sun., May 3

Music: Jump on your chariot and ride on over to the Neighborhood Theatre for an intimate, full band acoustic performance by Gavin Degraw.

Food: Stop in at Common House for some well-crafted Southern cooking.

Festival: It’s fiesta time! The Cinco de Mayo Fanta Festival offers music, folkloric dance performances and Latin American cuisine.
