10-in-10

Each Friday, we bring you 10 random CD reviews done in 10 words each… Beyonce I am…Sasha Fierce — Two CDs, six songs each. “I am…not environmentally conscious.” Dressy Bessy Holler and Stomp — Simplistic indie-pop sounded a too straight-outta-the-basement. Fitehouse Open — Spend more on music, less on scratch-and-sniff promos. Otis Gibbs Grandpa Walked…

The venue formerly known as Cricket Arena…

First, it was Bobcats Arena changing its name to Time Warner Cable Arena. Now, another Charlotte venue has undergone a name change. City council has approved that Cricket Arena will now be known as….wait for it… Bojangles Coliseum.

Fantasy and reality

Last week, as many as 1,500 people watched a 19-year-old man commit suicide via Web cam. What’s more horrifying than that?

More Beyonce…

To add to the Beyonce obsession we (and I use this term, “we,” loosely) have at CL, here is the Justin Timberlake SNL spoof version of her video “Single Ladies.”

Safety in satire: Charlotte: The Opera

It was only when I learned that Squonk Opera’s Charlotte: The Opera was infused with the work of such local notables as Martha Connerton and Boris “Bluz” Rogers that I decided to give Squonk a chance. I’d venture to say that if you adored Moody Blues in its day — and don’t mind the sort…

SPECIAL EVENT: Carolinas’ Thanksgiving Day Parade

It’s Thanksgiving, so of course it’s time to get stuffed (just be thankful you aren’t a turkey). With that being said it’s also time to catch up with family members you haven’t seen in ages and watch the Carolinas’ Thanksgiving Day Parade. You might not give a rats ass about standing out in the cold…

MUSIC: The Derek Trucks Band

The Derek Trucks Band, masterminds in blending an array of music — from genres like blues-rock to soul and world-beat — will perform two nights in Charlotte at McGlohon Theatre. The group is geared up to play tunes from its upcoming album Already Free (set for release in January 2009). If you can’t wait for…

Capsule reviews of films playing the week of Nov. 26

Current Releases: ASHES OF TIME REDUX The motion picture as mood ring, Ashes of Time Redux is another Wong Kar Wei production that relies as much (if not more) on the sensations created by its aural and visual flourishes than on any narrative devices. Originally released in 1994 as Ashes of Time, the movie has…

MUSIC: Q-Tip and The Cool Kids

Oh, how I miss the ’90s! Thankfully, bands like Q-Tip and The Cool Kids have preserved a little bit of old school ways via music. Their tracks have those feel-good, do-the-running man essence and beats, which somehow managed to make it through the turn of the century. Rap and hip-hop have changed a lot over…

Wall-E among new DVD reviews

THE GREGORY PECK COLLECTION (1952-1966). It’s hard to believe that a star of Gregory Peck’s magnitude has never received his own DVD box set, but here comes Universal Studios Home Entertainment to correct that oversight with a six-title collection. All but two of the films (Cape Fear and To Kill a Mockingbird) are making their…

MUSIC: Shiny Toy Guns

Despite Carah Faye Charnow’s departure the electronica-indie rock act Shiny Toy Guns, the band has managed to carry on. It put forth its second album Season of Poison — with featured replacement vocalist Sisely Treasure — and it isn’t a total sophomore slump. Sure, “Le Disko,” (from the group’s debut album We Are Pilots) was…

Australia: Thunder and blunder down under

During my entire career as a film reviewer, I’ve never walked out of a movie and never will, though of course I’ve been tempted on countless occasions. Given the promise of the love story-cum-historical epic-cum-adventure yarn Australia, I rather unexpectedly felt an urge to hoof it to my car during the torturous opening scenes of…

FILM: Rear Window

The Main Library’s fall film series “Manhattan in the 1950s” continues with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 classic, Rear Window. The Master of Suspense offers a sly commentary on the voyeuristic nature of cinema, as we watch as a photographer (James Stewart) and his girlfriend (Grace Kelly) spy on his neighbors in an apartment…

Four Christmases breaks out the ho-ho-ho’s

The purpose of theatrical trailers, as I (and the rest of the universe) understand it, is to showcase many of the film’s best scenes in an effort to get as many folks as possible to crowd the box office during opening week and beyond. The trailer for Four Christmases fails this test, as it focuses…

THEATER: Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold

Described as “Forensic Files goes to Bethlehem,” Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold is a Christmas-themed production that will have you laughing despite the holiday’s arrival during a piss-poor economic slump. The interactive show features the Sister’s retelling of the nativity story and her own investigation into what exactly happened to the…

Horoscope for Nov. 26 — Dec. 2, 2008

Sagittarius The Archer: (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) Your optimistic and happy attitude causes others to join your bandwagon and support your projects. You can envision a grand result and are able to persuade others to your point of view. The reward will be great enough that everyone will benefit so long as you back up this…

Synecdoche, New York worth a visit

To attempt to encapsulate Synecdoche, New York, in a few hundreds words seems a daunting task — akin, perhaps, to building an entire gymnasium out of wet sand or watching video clips of Ann Coulter without feeling a bit of puke rising up into the mouth. Charlie Kaufman has never felt the need to be…

ART: Wishful Thinking

Art is found in words, tunes and images alike, evoking emotions you never thought you could feel from something so simple, yet complex. Art is also talent on display and it gives an insight into a person’s inner being. The artists presented in Wishful Thinking — Flora Bowley, Michelle Caplan, Duy Huynh, Lisa Kairos, Carl…

Bizarre crimes from Charlotte police files

Sending A Message: A young girl called police to report that between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m., an unknown suspect scratched the hood of her car with an unknown object, writing something unreadable. She told police that earlier in the morning someone had wrapped her car in plastic wrap and marshmallows. Not sure how that…

Kids will want to adopt Bolt

In recent years, Disney plus Pixar has led to some terrific animated features, but Disney minus Pixar has led to yearnings to locate the nearest auditorium exit. Bolt is straight-up Disney, which would be worrisome if it wasn’t for the fact that Pixar guru John Lasseter has been handed the keys to the studio’s entire…

CD Review: Femi Kuti’s Day By Day

The Deal: “Reigning King of Afrobeat,” son of Fela, releases first studio album in seven years. The Good: Afro-beat’s closest sonic relative may be reggae, but on Kuti’s latest release, he does what he can to infuse a jazz influence and bring the music to its Nigerian roots. His 17-piece band may be in full-force,…

Three Charlotte churches serving love and food

When I wrote about country cuisine a few weeks ago, several readers prompted me on my oversight of United Church of Prayer — which is one of the downtown churches offering weekday lunches: • The $7.99 lunch at United House of Prayer for All People, 1019 S. Mint St., features Southern comfort food, served cafeteria-styled…

DVD Review: The House of the Rising Punk

The Deal: How punk got its name. The Good: “Don’t fuck with us, sweetheart,” growls New York Dolls’ vocalist David Johansen in a backstage clip from the 1970s. That sets the tone for the 1998 documentary House of the Rising Punk, capturing the musical lifestyle of punk before it had a name – from the…

Hilario Almazo, chef

Charlotte must seem small to Hilario Almazo. He spent the better part of his life living in two of the biggest cities in the world before coming here in 2002. Born and raised in Mexico City, he moved to New York City where he learned to cook during his breaks at an Italian restaurant, one…

CD Review: AC/DC’s Black Ice

The Deal: After 35 years, hard rockers from Down Under show no signs of slowing down on 15th studio album. The Good: For those who have been waiting for a new disc – the last one was released in 2000 – it’s the band’s longest, 15 tracks clocking in at just more than 55 minutes.…

Giving thanks: A compendium of blessings

It’s that time of the year again. Thanksgiving is here, nestled nicely between two extremely commercial “holidays,” Halloween and Christmas. It is a time that we come together to give thanks and then, the day after, to give all of our hard earned money away to the retail industry. Thanksgiving is a complex holiday because…

CD Review: Black Lagoon’s The Ruthless Workings of Nature

The Deal: Charlotte rockers release The Ruthless Workings of Nature, follow-up to 2001’s Laguna Negra. The Good: The band has survived a handful of lineup changes – currently singer Leahanne Woods-Smith, guitarist Andy Cauble, drummer Thomas Whitley, guitarist Rob Tavaglione and bassist Asher Griffis – since it first formed in 2001. There’s a raw edge…

What I’ll miss about Dubya

Welcome to the first post-election edition of Ask Boomer With Attitude, live from Charlotte, where mayors’ political careers die on the vine. Thanks to all of you who’ve written. Note that, as usual, one of the following questions is made up; it shouldn’t be too hard to spot. Dear BWA: I strongly disagree with your…

A view from the South (America, that is)

Evo Morales knows about “change you can believe in.” He also knows what happens when a powerful elite is forced to make changes it doesn’t want. Morales is the first indigenous president of Bolivia, the poorest country in South America. He was inaugurated in January 2006. Against tremendous internal opposition, he nationalized Bolivia’s natural-gas fields,…

So, I think I can dance …

I think I can dance … think being the operable word here. I, lacking any real form of technical training, essentially taught myself how to dance in my living room by watching MTV back when they used to actually play music videos. I then somehow became a dance teacher for the Boys & Girls Club…

The western world stumbles

Over the years, Martin Hennecke has gained the respect of the folks at CNBC for his track record in the financial prediction department, which, while not perfect, is better than that of most. Hennecke, the senior manager of private clients at Tyche, has a graphic he e-mails to anyone willing to listen. It’s by Standard…

CL previews upcoming shows

THURSDAY, NOV. 27 THANKSGIVING It’s not a band, it’s a holiday. However, if you still want to get out and away from the family unit for a while, there are still some shows going on. Check out the calendar to see what’s good. (Jeff Hahne) FRIDAY, NOV. 28 The Derek Trucks Band The Duane Allman…

It’s All in the Timing at Pineville Dinner Theater

“Spanky” Sprowles has a new gang of comedy cohorts at Pineville Dinner Theater. They’re not altogether different from the old gang. Brett Gentile, who helped jumpstart PDT last year with his onstage exploits in Having a Wonderful Time and My Husband’s Wild Desires, is now behind the scenes directing and masterminding the 2008-09 lineup. The…

The Virginia Reel finds its bass

Lots of bands go through This Is Spinal Tap/exploding drummer sagas. For The Virginia Reel, it’s been a near-endless procession of bass players since forming four years ago that has kept the local act on the periphery. But with the release of its elegant, full-band debut EP, Dark Ages of The Virginia Reel, singer/songwriter Neil…

Charming, somber and happy: Gershwin, Mozart & Adams concert

Neither Christof Perick nor any of the candidates to succeed him as Charlotte Symphony Orchestra musical director was on hand last week for the Gershwin, Mozart & Adams concert at the Belk. But with the Panthers out of town and the Bobcats mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, a surprising number of subscribers showed up for…
