A CLOCKWORK PRODUCTION: The List, starring Malcolm McDowell, was filmed in North Carolina Credit: Torch Media & Level Path Productions

The Deal: The List, a new motion picture with strong North Carolina ties, opens this Friday exclusively at the Ballantyne Village Theatre. For tickets or other info, call 704-369-5101 or go to www.bvtheatre.com.

The Plot: Based on the novel by Robert Whitlow, the story centers on a Charlotte lawyer (Chuck Carrington of TV’s JAG) who returns to his Charleston hometown and learns that his late father was involved with a secret organization created by South Carolina plantation owners at the end of the Civil War. The Covenant List of South Carolina, Ltd. has grown more sinister — and more powerful — over the decades, meaning that the young attorney will need to call upon the power of God to defeat it.

The Cast: In addition to Carrington, the film also stars Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Will Patton (Remember the Titans) and former MTV VJ Hilarie Burton.

The Carolina Connections: Produced by Boone-based Level Path Productions, the film was shot in Wilmington and employed homegrown talent in many departments. Whitlow, who served as an executive producer in addition to co-adapting his novel, lives in Charlotte with his wife Kathy (who also served as an executive producer) and their four children. (For more on Robert Whitlow, see “Profile” in this issue’s Fallout section.) The film’s producer-director, Gary Wheeler, resides in the N.C. mountains.
